Happy ’80s Birthday to Doug Corbett, who was a workhorse in his rookie season of 1980, logging 136.1 innings out of the Twins bullpen and posting a 1.98 ERA and 23 saves. He finished 3rd in the Rookie of the Year balloting.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark Bailey, who played in seven big league seasons and later became an Astros coach. His best major league season came in 1984 when he hit .265 with ten homers and 45 RBI in 114 games for Houston.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Angel Salazar, who spent five years in the bigs with the Expos, Royals, and Cubs.  

Happy ’80s Birthday to Logan Easley, who won two games for the Pirates between 1987 and 1989.

The Padres sign Carlos Baerga as an amateur free agent. 

He makes his big-league debut in 1990 and turns into one of the better offensive second basemen in the game.

Steve Carlton becomes the fourth pitcher to win three Cy Young Awards. He finishes the 1980 season with a 24-9 record and a 2.34 E.R.A in 304 innings. No one has thrown that many innings since.

Whitey Herzog is named N.L. Manager of the year after taking the Cardinals to the World Series for the second time in four years.

11/4/86

John McNamara is named A.L. Manager of the Year after leading the Red Sox to the World Series.  

11/4/87

Benito Santiago goes from Rated Rookie to Rookie of the Year. The Padres catcher hits .300 with 18 homers and 79 RBI. He also has a 34-game hitting streak.

Sadaharu Oh announces his retirement. He finishes his career with 868 home runs.

11/4/82

The Phillies release Stan Bahnsen and his career is over. 

Bahnsen won the A.L. Rookie of the Year in 1968 and spent 16 years in the bigs. He retires with 146 career wins. 

11/4/82

The Phillies release Willie Montanez and his career is over. 

Montanez finished 2nd in the N.L. Rookie of the Year race in 1971 and spent 14 years in the bigs with nine teams. 

11/4/88

The Tigers release Larry Herndon and his career is over. 

Herndon spends 14 years in the bigs and wins a ring with the TIgers in 1984. 

Managerial Changes

11/4/81

The Phillies introduce Pat Corrales as their new manager. 

He would last until the middle of 1983 when he is fired with the team in first place. 

11/4/82

Cleveland names Mike Ferraro as their new manager.

He will be fired before the end of the season.
