Happy ’80s Birthday to Larry Herndon, who spent 13 seasons in the big leagues and enjoyed his most productive years in Detroit in 1982 and ’83 when he hit a combined .297 with 43 homers and 180 RBI. He was also a minor league teammate of a fella named Randy Poffo, AKA The Macho Man.
Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark Corey, who played in three seasons for the Orioles from 1979 through 1981. He also won the Tiple Crown in the Appalachian League in 1976.
Happy ’80s Birthday to Sherman Corbett, who won two games for the 1988 Angels and pitched until 1990.
Former Dodgers and A’s pitcher star Bob Welch was born on this day in 1956. Welch enjoyed somewhat of a breakout year in 1980 when he won 14 games in 32 starts, including a 12-star span when he went 8-2 with a 2.02 ERA. He also won 27 games for the A’s in 1990 and collected the CY Young Award. He passed away in 2014

The Twins send Bert Blyleven to the Angels for a package of minor leaguers, including Paul Sorrento. Coming off a 17-loss season in 1988, Blyleven bounces back and wins 17 for the Angels in 1989.

Rollie Fingers wins the Cy Young Award. Steve McCatty finishes 2nd but Rollie’s mustache tips the scales in his favor. That and 28 saves coupled with a 1.04 E.R.A.

Talks break down between the Dodgers and Floyd Bannister, who had been traded to L.A. earlier in the week in exchange for Steve Shirley, Alejandro Pena, and Mark Bradley. The Dodgers had 72 hours to sign Bannister, or the deal would be voided.
Bannister enters the free agent market and signs with the White Sox where he helps them win the A.L. West.

The Red Sox announce they will not offer contracts to Tom Seaver or Tony Armas. Seaver attemps a comeback with the Mets in 1987 but it doesn’t go well and he retires.

Mark McGwire becomes the second player to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award by unanimous vote. (Fisk) McGwire hit 49 homers and drove in 118 RBI.

Voters in San Francisco reject a proposal to build a new $80 million ballpark for the Giants. Team owner Bob Lurie says he will look into relocating the franchise.

The Phillies release Larry Christenson and his career is over. Christenson won 45 games from 1976 through 1978 before arm problems derailed his career. Speaking of derailed, breaking his collarbone in a bike accident didn’t help either.

Bill Madlock has surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. Perhaps that explains why he hit “just” .277 in 1980. He bounces back by leading the NL in hitting for the third time in 1981 with a .341 batting average.

The White Sox name Jeff Torborg as their new manager. He replaces Jim Fregosi, who was fired at the end of the season.

The Reds hire Lou Piniella and win the World Series 11 months later.
