Happy ’80s Birthday to Roy Thomas, who won 20 games in his big league career and holds the distinction of being chosen by the Phillies in the first round of the 1971 draft. They picked a dude named Schmidt in the second round.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Tomlin, who was the youngest of 12 children in his family, was drafted in the 19th round and spent 13 years in the big leagues. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Randy Scarbery, who was picked in the first round twice and appeared in 60 games for the White Sox in 1979 and 1980.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Ron Hodges, who spent 12 years as a backup catcher for the Mets and played in the 1973 World Series. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Greg Booker, who spent eight years in the big leagues and holds the unique distinction of being traded by his father-in-law.

Greg married Jack McKeon’s daughter.

The Blue Jays trade Dick Davis to the Pirates for a PTBNL. Pittsburgh sends Wayne Nordhagen to Toronto to complete the trade.  

Davis plays 39 games for the Pirates and his major league career is over, though he does spend 1983 in the minor leagues.

The Cardinals trade Doug Bair to the Tigers for a PTBNL. Detroit sends Dave Rucker to St. Louis to complete the trade.

The Blue Jays trade Mitch Webster to the Expos for a PTBNL. Montreal sends Cliff Young to Toronto to complete the deal.

Webster spends 11 more seasons in the major leagues and leads the NL in triples in 1986.

The Padres sign Steve Kemp as a free agent. 

He spends the rest of 1986 in Triple-A Las Vegas where he is managed by Larry Bowa.

The Tigers sign Ivan de Jesus as a free agent. 

He appears in seven games for the Tigers and his major league career is over.

John Rusell goes 1 for 4 with a single off Larry McWilliams in his big league debut. 

He’d spend ten seasons in the major leagues and later manage the Pirates.

Craig Shipley goes 1 for 4 with an RBI in his big league debut for the Dodgers. 

He spends eleven years in the majors with five teams.

He becomes the first player to hit three homers in a game in each league.

Pete Rose doubles off John Stuper to pass Henry Aaron and move into 2nd place on the all-time hits list.

Wade Boggs hits his 1st career homer, a walk-off shot in the bottom of the 11th off Dave Tobik.

He signs with Oakland, appears in two games, and retires.

The Dodgers release Rick Monday and the career of the first-ever #1 draft pick is over.

Monday plays 19 years in the big leagues and finishes with a .264 batting average, 241 home runs, and a ring.
