Happy ’80s Birthday to Norm Charlton, who graduated from Rice with a triple major and made a name for himself when he trucked Mike Scioscia. I was there that night and it was epic.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bob Davidson, who was born in Germany and pitched one inning for the 1989 Yankees. He gave up a two-run dinger to George Brett.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jose DeJesus, who won 20 games over five seasons for the Royals and Phillies.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Doe Boyland, who played 21 games for the Pirates between 1978 and 1981.

He had the misfortune of striking out in his first at-bat… while sitting on the bench. During his first AB, Phil Garner stole second when Boyland was down 1-2 in the count. With a base open, Mets manager Joe Torre brought in Skip Lockwood and Chuck Tanner pinch-hit Rennie Stennett for Boyland. Stennett struck out but it was “credited” to Boyland.

The Yankees sign slugger Jack Clark as a free agent. Clark injures his hamstring in spring training and hits .242 with 27 dingers in his lone season in the Bronx.

Deaths

Alan Wiggins passed away OTD in 1991. Wiggins stole 242 bases over seven seasons but also dealt with multiple suspensions due to drug problems as well as multiple rehab stints. He made his debut in 1981 and was out of the game by 1987. He died of AIDS after being infected by a dirty needle. He was just 32 years old.
