Happy ’80s Birthday to Joe Kerrigan, who pitched for the Expos and Orioles and coached and or managed five teams.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Davey Johnson, who won a World Series with the 1986 Mets. Upon recording the final out, members of the team knelt in a brief moment of self-reflection and then hurried home to avoid the craziness on the streets.

Happy ’80s Birthday to LaSchelle Tarver, a Mets draftee who had a cup of coffee with the Red Sox. He has an interesting story.  

Happy ’80s Birthday to Matt Alexander, who spent eight years in the bigs with the Cubs, A’s, and Pirates. He won a ring in 1979 with Pittsburgh.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Stegman, who spent six years in the bigs and set a record in 1984 when he had eight extra-inning at-bats in a game against the Brewers.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bill Earley, who pitched in three games for the 1986 Cardinals and was a minor league coach for nine years.  

Happy ’80s Birthday to Hipolito Pena, who spent parts of three seasons in the bigs with the Pirates and Yankees.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Joel Davis, who was the #13 overall pick in the 1983 draft and won 8 games for the White Sox between 1985 and 1988.

The Cubs trade Ron Cey to the A’s for Luis Quinones. The Penguin plays 45 games in Oakland and is released in mid-season.

1/30/89

The Phillies sign Larry McWilliams as a free agent. He goes 2-11 in 40 games and is traded to the Royals in September. 

1/30/89

The Astros sign Dan Schatzeder as a free agent. He goes 5-4 with Houston in a year-plus before being traded to the Mets in September of 1990.

Transactions

1/30/84

The Mets release Dave Kingman, who was coming off a season in which he hit just .198 with 13 homers. Kong signs with the A’s two months later and hits another 100 dingers over the next three seasons and makes even more friends in the media.
