He had the misfortune of striking out in his first at-bat… while sitting on the bench. During his first AB, Phil Garner stole second when Boyland was down 1-2 in the count. With a base open, Mets manager Joe Torre brought in Skip Lockwood and Chuck Tanner pinch-hit Rennie Stennett for Boyland. Stennett struck out but it was “credited” to Boyland.

Deaths
Alan Wiggins passed away OTD in 1991. Wiggins stole 242 bases over seven seasons but also dealt with multiple suspensions due to drug problems as well as multiple rehab stints. He made his debut in 1981 and was out of the game by 1987. He died of AIDS after being infected by a dirty needle. He was just 32 years old.
