The Phillies trade Larry Bowa and Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs for Ivan DeJesus. It was part of a busy and interesting offseason full of drama at The Vet

The Mets sign Dick Tidrow as a free agent. He appears in 11 games and is released in May.

1/27/87

The Indians sign Ed Vande Berg as a free agent. He goes 1-0 in 55 games and plays his final big-league season in Texas in 1988.

Big Days

Commissioner Peter Ueberroth concludes agreements with the Braves and Yankees to compensate other baseball owners for potential lost attendance revenue due to games broadcast by WTBS and WPIX. Negotiations continue with WGN (Cubs) and WOR (Mets). Terms are not announced but media reports put the Braves contribution at approximately $30 million over a five-year period.

The Phillies purchase Dickie Thon from the Padres. Thon’s contract gives him the right to demand a trade and he did. He would have been a free agent had the Pads not traded him by March 15th. He hits .271 with 15 homers for the Phillies in 1989.
