Happy ’80s Birthday to Pete LaCock, who spent nine years in the bigs with the Cubs and Royals. He hit one slam in his career, and it came off Bob Gibson. Years later he faced Gibby in an old-timers game and Gibby drilled him.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chili Davis, who spent 19 seasons in the bigs with the Giants, Angels, Twins, Yankees, and Royals. He also leads all Jamaican-born players in homers with 350.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jerry Turner, who spent ten years in the bigs with the Padres, Tigers, and White Sox.

Happy ’80s Birthday to T.R. Bryden, who went 2-1 for the 1986 Angels.

Darrell Porter was born on this day in 1952. Porter was the 4th overall draft pick in 1970 and spent 17 seasons in the bigs with the Brewers, Royals, Cardinals, and Rangers. He passed away in 2002. Substance issues ruined what could have been a great career

The great Don Zimmer was born on this day in 1931 and spent 65 years wearing a baseball uniform. We should all be so lucky. He passed away in 2014.

Mark Littell was born OTD in 1953. He pitched in the big leagues for nine years, including winning a ring with the 1982 Cardinals.

The Braves take Bob Horner off the trading block and sign him to a four-year contract worth $6 million, including incentives.  Horner hits .303 with 20 homers in the first year of the deal, but a broken wrist scuttles his 1984 season.

The Angels sign Claudell Washington as a free agent. He splits the year between the Angels and Yankees and retires.

The Expos sign Matt Stairs as an amateur free agent. He makes his debut in 1992 and plays until 2011.

The Brewers release Don Money and his career is over. He finishes with 1,623 hits and four all-star appearances.

The Yankees select Tim Belcher in the 1st round (1st pick) of the January draft. They sign him in February, but mistakenly leave him unprotected as a free-agent compensation pick and the A’s grab him

The Cubs select Damon Berryhill in the 1st round (4th pick) of the January draft. He makes his debut in 1987 and spends ten years in the major leagues.

The Pirates select Jay Buhner in the 2nd round of the secondary phase of the January draft. They trade him to the Yankees three days later in a deal that sends Steve Kemp to Pittsburgh.
