Happy ’80s Birthday to  Mike Scott, who won 18 games, and the Cy Young Award in 1986.

From 1985-89, Scott went 86-49 with a 2.93 E.R.A., won a Cy Young, finished 2nd another year and made three All-Star teams.

Happy ’80s Birthday to “Famous” Amos Otis, a Royals staple of the 1970s and early ’80s.

Amos spent 17 years in the bigs and racked up more than 2,000 hits while making five All-Star teams and winning three Gold Gloves.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Lou Thornton, who spent parts of five seasons in the big leagues with Toronto and the Mets.

His first hit was an RBI single off Kirk McCaskill on May 1, 1985.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Steve Lombardozzi, who spent six years in the big leagues and won a ring with the Twins in 1987.

Steve hit .412 in the Series. Not too shabby.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bill Lyons, who spent two seasons in the big leagues and played all nine positions in his final professional game as a member of the Triple-A Louisville Cardinals.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Curt Wilkerson, who spent 11 years in the big leagues with the Rangers, Royals, Cubs, and Pirates.

Big Days

Steve Carlton spins a 1-hit shutout against the Cardinals, one of six one-hitters he’d throw in his Hall of Fame career.

Lefty would win 24 and his 3rd Cy Young Award in 1980.

Wade Boggs records the first hit of his career, a single to LF off Rich Dotson. 3,009 more would follow.

In an NFL Draft shocker, the Colts select a Yankees minor league outfielder in the first round.

Not surprisingly, the lone San Diego hit comes from Tony Gwynn.

Eric Show goes 10 and strikes out 13 in 3-2 loss to the Giants.

Guessing it will be a while before we see a starter go 10 in April again.

Cobra goes 2-5 with 2 homers and 5 RBI in an 11-3 win over the Astros in the Dome.

The first shot comes off a youngster named Tom Glavine while the 2nd, a grand slam, comes off of Charlie Puelo.

Tim Raines singles off Craig Swan to lead off the bottom of the first inning against the Mets. He takes off to steal 2nd and Mets catcher Ron Hodges’ throw hits Swan and he suffers a broken rib. He throws just 8 1/3 innings the rest of the season.

Coming off back-to-back wins, Geoff Zahn leaves his start against the Mariners with shoulder tenderness. He ends up missing the next three months and makes just three more appearances in his career. He finishes with 111 career wins.
