Happy ’80s Birthday to the Phillie Phanatic who was “born” on this day in 1978.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Greg Wells, who appeared in 47 games for the Blue Jays and Twins in the early ’80s and then went to Japan and hit 277 homers over ten seasons.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Craig Minetto, who was drafted in the early ’70s, spent a year pitching in Italy, and then returned to the States where he pitched for the A’s from 1978 through 1981. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Larry Pashnick, who was born in Michigan, went to Michigan State, and made his debut with the Tigers before finishing his career with the Twins. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Owen, who spent four years in the big leagues with the Cubs and Royals and then went into coaching and scouting. He’s Spike’s brother.

Scott Fletcher goes 1-for-4 with a single off Sparky Lyle in his big league debut. 

He’d spend fifteen seasons in the major leagues earn MVP votes in 1986 with the Rangers.

A big Cardinals lefty named Joe Magrane strikes out 7 and gets the win in his big league debut. He’d finish 3rd in the Rookie of the Year balloting.

Bill Bean collects four hits in his major league debut.

Bean has two singles and two doubles in a 13-2 win over Kansas City at Tiger Stadium.

4/25/89

Chris Hoiles goes 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter for Baltimore in his big-league debut.

He plays just six games in 1989 but becomes regular in 1991 and plays in ten major league seasons.

A Twins fan throws marshmallows at Billy Martin. Billy isn’t pleased and a melee is narrowly avoided, but not before Billy hurls some homophobic slurs.

Major League Baseball suspends Mariners manager Maury Wills for two games for ordering the grounds crew at the Kingdome to enlarge the batters boxes.

Frank Tanana and Mark Clear combine to punch out 15 Orioles hitters, walk just three and allow three extra base hits, none of them homers.

Naturally, the Orioles win the game 7-2.

Larry Parrish hits three homers and drives in all seven Expos runs but it isn’t enough as Montreal falls to the Braves 8-7 in 11.

Dwight Gooden becomes the first teenager to strike out ten batters in a game since Bert Blyleven  in 1970.

Doc would lead the N.L.  with 276 strikeouts.

Simba goes 3 for 5 with a walk-off slam and 5 RBI as the Brewers beat the Tigers 11-7.

4/25/86

Craig Lefferts coughs up the lead in the top of the 12th inning, then hits a walk-off dinger in the bottom of the 12th to give the Padres 9-8 win over the Giants at Jack Murphy Stadium. 

4/25/89

Glenn Braggs goes 3 for 4 with two homers and 5 RBI in a 10-4 Brewers win over the Twins.

Managerial Changes

The Yankees are an unacceptable two games under .500 so George fires Bob Lemon and replaces him with Gene Michael. 

Michael brings the Yankees back to an even .500 after 86 games before he gets fired too.
