Happy ’80s Birthday to Alan Bannister, who made his debut for the Phillies in 1974 and was dealt to the White Sox prior to 1976 in exchange for Jim Kaat. Alan spent 12 years in the major leagues with five teams.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Paxton, who won 10 games with the Red Sox as a rookie in 1977 and was traded to Cleveland in a package that sent Dennis Eckersley to Boston. Mike won 12 games with the Indians in 1978 but just 8 more over the next two seasons.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Don Kainer, who appeared in four games for the 1980 Rangers and was a member of the 1975 University of Texas College World Series champs.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Rene Gonzales, who spent 13 years in the bigs with seven teams and later managed in the minor leagues.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Clark, who spent 13 seasons in the bigs with six teams and later managed in the minor leagues. He also briefly managed the Astros.

Former Oakland and San Diego skipper Steve Boros was born OTD in 1936. Steve also spent seven years in the big leagues as a player with Detroit, Cincinnati, and the Cubs. He passed away in 2010.

Former umpire Lee Weyer was born OTD in 1936. Lee was a National League umpire from 1961 until his death in 1988.

Happy Birthday to former Cleveland closer Rick Vaughn.

The Royals sign Omar Moreno as a free agent. He plays 24 games in Kansas City and finishes his career in Atlanta in 1986.

Jesse Barfield goes 1-for-4 with an RBI single off Chicago’s Steve Trout in his big-league debut. Barfield spends 12 years in the bigs and dude had a cannon.

Tim Teufel goes 1-for-4 with a single off Scott McGregor in his big-league debut. He is traded to the Mets prior to 1986 and wins a ring.

Neal Heaton allows one run in 3 2/3 innings against Toronto in his big-league debut. He spends 12 years in the major leagues with seven teams.

Pete O’Brien goes 1-for-5 with an RBI triple off LaMarr Hoyt in his big-league debut. Pete spends 12 years in the major leagues and puts up good power numbers in the mid-‘80s.

Paul O’Neill goes 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single off Jeff Lahti in his big-league debut. He would later star in Seinfeld.

Matt Nokes grounds into an inning-ending double play in his first at-bat then gets two hits in his next three at-bats against the Phillies in his big-league debut. The Giants trade him to Detroit and he plays until 1995.

Greg Maddux allows a home run to Billy Hatcher in the bottom of the 18th inning in his big-league debut and is tagged with the loss. The game was suspended from the day before. Things get better for him as his career progressed.

Kevin Seitzer goes 2-for-5 against the White Sox in his big-league debut. He leads the A.L. in hits the following season.

9/3/88

Gary Sheffield makes his debut as a defensive replacement for Dale Sveum. He was just 19 years old. He plays in 95 games the following year and spends 22 seasons in the major leagues.

Ken Hill gives up two runs in three innings of work against Houston in his big-league debut. He pitches until 2001 and wins 117 games  

9/3/89

John Olerud goes 1-for-1 with a single off German Gonzalez in his big-league debut. He would spend 17 years in the big leagues and hit a league-leading .363 in 1993. Dude could swing it.

Dave Parker was boppin. He goes 4-for-4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBI as the Pirates beat the Astros 10-4.

9/3/80

Steve Stone runs his record to 22-5 as the Orioles beat the Mariners 5-1 in Baltimore. He would finish the season with 25 wins and a Cy Young Award.

9/3/81

Jerry Remy goes 6-for-10 with 6 singles as the Red Sox and Mariners play to a 19-inning tie. Seattle wins it in the 20th when the game is resumed the following day.

9/3/82

Lefty goes the distance, allows just two hits, and punches out 12 in a 2-1 win over the Padres. Just another day. He would win his 4th Cy Young Award.

9/3/83

Down 5-3 heading into the final inning, Cleveland sends 15 men to the plate and scores 10 runs in the 9th to beat Oakland. Chris Bando and Gorman Thomas both record two hits in the inning and Oakland uses six pitchers.

Cal goes 5-for-6 with 2 homers and 4 RBI as the Orioles beat the Twins 13-0. The Birds hit 6 dingers in the game.

9/3/84

Bruce Sutter sets an N.L. record by recording his 38th save in a 7-3 win over the Mets. He would finish the year with 45.

9/3/85

The Kid goes 3-for-4 with three dingers and six RBI as the Mets beat the Padres 8-3.

9/3/86

Barry Larkin, who made his big-league debut on August 13th, is named the American Association Rookie of the Year and the MVP. Larkin hit .329 with 10 homers and 51 RBI in 103 games for the Triple-A Denver Zephyrs.

The Blue Jays release Balor Moore. He spends 1981 pitching in the minor leagues and his career is over. He was a 1st-round pick of the Expos in 1969 and spent eight years in the major leagues.

9/3/81

The Brewers purchase Donnie Moore from the Cardinals. He makes three appearances for Milwaukee and is returned to St. Louis before being dealt to Atlanta in February of 1982.

Kevin Brown hits Kevin Seitzer with a pitch to lead off the game and the tone is set between the Royals and the Rangers. Kansas City wins the game 13-2, but the two teams combine for seven hit batters.
