Sammy Stewart was born on this day in 1954. Sammy pitched in the big leagues for 10 seasons and won a ring with Baltimore in 1983. He passed away in 2019.

Former Commissioner Bowie Kuhn was born OTD in 1926. He served as commissioner from 1969 through 1984 and it was a rocky road, marked primarily by labor problems with the players. He passed away in 2007.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Lenny Harris, who made his debut with the Reds in 1988 and spent 18 years in the big leagues. He won a ring with the Marlins in 2003 and is the all-time leader in pinch-hits with 212

Happy ’80s Birthday to Gary Rajsich, who spent four years in the bigs with the Mets, Cardinals, and Giants and later played with his brother, Dave, in the Senior League. He became a scout and signed Jon Lester for the Red Sox.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark Knudson, who made his debut with the 1985 Astros and won ten games for the Brewers in 1990.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bob Melvin, who spent ten years in the bigs with multiple teams and later became a very successful manager.

The Padres trade Keith Moreland and Chris Brown to the Tigers for pitcher Walt Terrell. Neither Zonk nor Terrell stays long in their new homes. The Pads sent Terrell to the Yankees in exchange for Mike Pagliarulo the following July and Detroit flipped Moreland to the Orioles a few days later. Brown finished his career in Detroit.

Just moments after the final out of the World Series, George Steinbrenner issues a statement apologizing “to the people of New York and Yankee fans everywhere for the performance of the Yankee team in the World Series.”

The A’s release Joe Rudi and his career is over. He finishes with a .264 lifetime average and three rings. He was runner-up in the A.L. MVP balloting in 1972 and 1974.

The Red Sox release Larry Parrish and his big league career is over. Over 15 years in the big leagues with the Expos, Rangers, and Boston, Parrish hits 256 homers including two 3-homer games. He moves to Japan and hits another 70 homers over two seasons before finally retiring.

Managerial Changes

The Padres fire Steve Boros and name Larry Bowa as their new manager. Bowa lasts until midway through the 1988 season before he is fired and replaced by Jack McKeon.
