Happy ’80s Birthday to Al Leiter, who struck out the side in his first major league inning and once struck out 32 batters in a 13-inning game in high school. He made his big-league debut in 1987 and won two World Series rings.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bo McLaughlin, who won a Gold Medal with Team USA in the 1974 Amateur World Series, spent six years in the big leagues, and another 20 as a pitching coach for multiple organizations.

Dwight Lowry was born OTD in 1957. He made his big-league debut with the 1984 Tigers and returned to the big in 1986. He passed away of a heart attack in 1997 while he was managing in the minor leagues. He was just 39 years old.

Happy ’80s Birthday to George Hinshaw, who attended Centennial HS in Compton, CA and appeared in 13 games for the Padres in 1982 and 1983. Centennial alums include Al Cowens, Lenny Randle, Lonnie Smith, Reggie Smith, and more. After his playing career was over, George went into coaching.

Rick Sutcliffe is named the N.L. Cy Young Award winner. Sutt went 16-1 for the Cubs after coming over from Cleveland two days before the June 15 trading deadline.

John Tudor pitches a five-hit, 3 – 0 victory over the Royals to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

Bruce Hurst’s complete game victory gives the Red Sox a 4 – 2 win and 3-2 lead in the World Series against the Mets. Hurst scatters 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
