Happy ’80s Birthday to Glenn Davis, who put up big power numbers for the Astros before being dealt to the Orioles in 1991 for Steve Finley, Pete Harnisch and Curt Schilling.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Fitzgerald, who played in 13 games for the 1988 Cardinals.

The Cubs trade Dennis Lamp to the South Side in exchange for Ken Kravec. Both pitchers had fallen out of favor with their previous teams but at least they didn’t have to move.

3/28/82

The Astros trade Dave Roberts to the Phillies for Steve Dunnegan. The former overall #1 pick plays in 28 games for the Phillies in his final big league season.

3/28/86

The Yankees and Red Sox pull off a rare deal when they swap DHs. New York sends Don Baylor to Boston in exchange for Mike Easler.

3/28/89

The Expos trade Neal Heaton to the Pirates for Brett Gideon. Heaton wins 21 games over the next three years and helps the Pirates win back-to-back N.L. East titles in 1990 and 1991.

3/28/85

The Padres sign Al Bumbry as a free agent. He spends the season coming off the bench and retires.

3/28/81

In a continuation of his feud with umpires, Earl Weaver changes into street clothes and manages the Orioles/Blue Jays game from the stands. Earl was still upset about not getting a list of substitutions for the Royals earlier in spring training. He pulled his team off the field, which resulted in a forfeit and a suspension. When he returned from the suspensions he picked up the argument where he left off and was ejected.

Big Days

3/28/84

Bill Buckner blasts Cubs management after a trade pushes him to the bench. Chicago acquired Gary Matthews and Bob Dernier from the Phillies and the Cubs said they’d move Leon Durham to 1st base and bench Buckner. Among the barbs Buckner tosses out is that he hates Cubs VP Charlie Fox. He’s dealt to Boston in May.

3/28/86

Auburn announces that Bo Jackson is ineligible to continue playing baseball at the school after he inadvertently violated SEC rules by accepting a flight from the Tampa Bay Bucs, who had drafted him in the NFL.

3/28/88

The Reds release Angel Salazar and hand the 3rd base job to rookie Chris Sabo. This works out well as Sabes edges out Mark Grace for the 1988 Rookie of the Year Award.

Transactions

3/28/82

The Mariners purchase Al Cowens from the Tigers. He spends the final five seasons of his career in Seattle before retiring.

3/28/82

The Blue Jays release Juan Berenguer. He signs with the Twins and spends another 11 seasons in the bigs, winning a World Series with the Twins in 1987.

3/28/82

The Blue Jays release Nino Espinosa and his career is over. Nino pitched more than 600 innings and won 35 games from 1977 through 1979 but suffered a shoulder injury that ended his career.

3/28/86

The Yankees release Phil Niekro. He signs with Cleveland and wins 11 games in his age 47 season.

3/28/88

The A’s release Mickey Tettleton. He signs with Baltimore and hits 223 homers over the next ten years.

3/28/89

The Cubs release Goose Gossage. He signs with the Giants and pitches for another five years.

3/28/89

The Angels release Davey Concepcion and his career is over. He finishes with 2,326 hits, 5 Gold Gloves, and two rings.

Injuries

3/28/82

Rick Mahler hits a line drive off Phil Niekro’s ribs during BP. The injury forces Knucksie to miss his Opening Day start. Mahler fills in and throws a 2-hit shutout against the Padres.

Deaths

Umpire Nick Bremigan passed away OTD in 1989 from a heart attack. He was just 43 years old.
