Happy ’80s Birthday to Phillies righty Dick Ruthven. His funky delivery helped him win 123 games in the bigs and he was the winning pitcher in Game Five of the 1980 NLCS.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Hostetler, who won a National Championship with U.S.C., was drafted by the Giants three times, and had a big rookie year with the Rangers in 1982.

Lynn McGlothen was born OTD in 1950. He pitched in the big leagues for 11 seasons and was an All-Star in 1974. He was killed in a fire in 1984. He was just 34.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Vic Harris, who put up good numbers in the minor leagues and had blazing speed but had trouble hitting at the major league level. He finished up his career in 1980 with Milwaukee.

The A’s trade Bob Lacey and a minor leaguer to the Padres for a minor leaguer, Kevin Bell, and Tony Phillips. Lacey served as Oakland’s closer in 1980 but wanted to be a starter. Billy Martin was so fed up that he kicked Lacey out of camp and then traded him.

The White Sox trade John Cangelosi to the Pirates for Jim Winn.

The Royals trade David Cone and Chris Jelic to the Mets for Rick Anderson, Mauro Gozzo, and Ed Hearn. Cone wins 79 games over the next five seasons.

The Yankees send Dana Ridenour to the Royals for Steve Balboni. Balboni hits 34 homers over the next two years in his return to New York.

The Dodgers release Ken Brett. He signs with the Royals and finishes his career with two seasons in KC alongside his brother.

The Dodgers release Johnny Oates. He signs with the Yankees and finishes his playing career with two years in New York.

The Pirates release Randy Jones and his career is over. He finishes with 100 wins, including 42 combined in 1975 and ’76. He also won the Cy Young in ’76.

The Astros release J.R. Richard, ending his career. It’s the end of a very sad story.

3/27/86

The Rangers release Burt Hooton and his career is over. He finishes with 151 wins over 15 years, including a no-hitter. He also won a ring with the Dodgers in 1981.

3/27/87

The Royals release Rudy Law and his career is over. He spends seven years in the big leagues and steals 228 bags.

3/27/89

The Tigers release Dwayne Murphy. He signs with the Phillies and hits .218 in 98 games before retiring. Dude was solid.

Injuries

3/27/89

The Braves announce that Bruce Sutter has suffered a second torn rotator cuff. The injury ends his career at age 36 and he is elected to the Hall of Fame in 2006.
