Happy ’80s Birthday to Terry Steinbach, who appeared in three straight World Series with the A’s and finished up with the Twins. Terry caught a lot of flack for being named a starter in the 1988 All-Star Game when he was hitting just .217 so he told everyone to stick it and won the damn MVP of the game.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Ron Gant, who went 30-30 in 1990 and 1991. Dude is some kinda strong. He’s currently a morning TV host in Atlanta.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jeff Stember.

Jeff pitched in one game for the Giants in 1980, drawing a start against the Astros on August 5th. Terry Puhl hit his first pitch into the seats for a home run but he settled down and pitched three innings before manager Dave Bristol pinch-hit for him with the bases loaded. I love stories like this.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Woodard, who spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues and hit one career home run. The blast came off of Dane Iorg.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Tobik, who won 14 games over the course of his eight-year career and was drafted out of the baseball factory of Ohio University.  Go Bobcats!

Happy ’80s Birthday to Larry Wolfe, who was drafted three times and spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with Minnesota and Boston.

3/2/82

The Mariners send Bud Black to the Royals to complete a deal made in October of 1981. Black is forced to uproot his family and alter his life completely, BUT… the deal provides inspiration to the fine folks at Fleer.

3/2/85

The Expos sign Cesar Hernandez as an amateur free agent.

He makes his major league debut in 1992 with the Reds and plays in 61 games at the major league level.

3/2/88

The White Sox sign Ravelo Manzanillo as a free agent.

He pitches in two games for the Sox and resurfaces in the big leagues in 1992 with Pittsburgh.

3/2/88

The Rangers sign Ed Vande Berg as a free agent.

He goes 2-2 for Texas and spends the next four seasons in the minor leagues

3/2/89

Marge Schott settles a salary dispute with outfielder Kal Daniels by flipping a coin in the parking lot of the spring training complex on live TV. Daniels wins the toss and collects an extra $25k in 1989.

Big Days

3/2/87

Joe Carter walks out of Indians camp in a salary dispute.

Carter hit .302 in 1986 with 29 homers, 29 SBs, and led  MLB with 121 RBI. Cleveland automatically renewed his salary for $250,000 with no incentives.

Transactions

3/2/88

The Rangers release Larry McWilliams.

He signs with the Cardinals and wins six games over 136 innings. Sounds like there was still some life left in that arm.

Fights

3/2/89

Darryl Strawberry takes a swing at Keith Hernandez at a Mets photo shoot in Spring Training. “Me and Mex, something’s been going on for a while. It just came out.”

Deaths

Rick Mahler passed away OTD in 2005. He was just 51 years old.

Sammy Stewart passed away OTD in 2018.
