Ken Reitz was born OTD in 1951.

He spent 11 years in the big leagues, won a Gold Glove, and was the starting 3rd baseman for the N.L. in the 1980 All-Star Game.

Ken passed away in 2021.

Happy ’80s Birthday to George Vukovich, who was a rookie on the 1980 Phillies and spent 6 years in the big leagues.

Doug Jones was born OTD in 1957. He pitched in three decades and racked up 303 saves along the way. Doug passed away in 2021.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Charlie Mitchell, who pitched in 12 games for the Red Sox in 1984 and 1985.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tom Klawitter, who pitched in seven games for the 1985 Twins.

6/24/87
The Twins trade minor leaguer Tom Schwarz and Danny Clay to the Phillies for Dan Schatzeder and cash.

Schatzeder goes 3-1 for Minnesota and helps them win the World Series.

6/24/84

Jim Presley goes 1 for 3 with a double off Bert Blyleven in his big league debut.

He’d spend eight years in the major leagues and hit 135 homers. Dude had some pop.

6/24/86

Mike Stanley goes 0 for 2 in his big league debut for the Rangers.

He spends 15 years in the major leagues and hit .356 in the postseason.

Big Days

6/24/80

Richie Hebner goes 2 for 4 with a double and drives in 6 in a 9-5 win over Cleveland. He had a double and a single with the bases loaded and also drove in a run on a groundout.

Don Sutton strikes out Alan Bannister in the 8th inning of a 3 – 2 win over Cleveland to become the 8th pitcher in major league history with 3,000 career strikeouts.

6/24/84

Trailing 2-0 with one out in the bottom of the 9th, Tim Teuffel hits a pinch-hit 3-run walk-off inside the park homer to give the Twins a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

6/24/84

Joe Morgan hits his 265th career home run as a second baseman to break Rogers Hornsby’s major-league record for that position.

Jeff Kent is the current record holder with 377.

6/24/84

In his second start with his new team, Rick Sutcliffe punches out 14 in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals. That trade worked out for the Cubbies.

6/24/89

Chuck Finley beats the Orioles 8-3 and strikes out 15.

He’d finish the year with 156 strikeouts.

6/24/89

Vince Coleman steals his 39th and 40th consecutive bases in a 5 – 2 loss to the Pirates to break the major league record set by Davey Lopes in 1975.

He’d steal 50 in a row before getting caught.

6/24/89

Joe Carter hits three homers in a game for the third time in his career and the Indians beat Texas, 7 – 3.

Joe could hit.

He returns to the U.S. the following year and plays until 1991.

6/24/86

The Yankees release Ivan DeJesus.

He signs with the Reds, is released again, and ends up in San Francisco in 1987 before finishing up in Detroit in 1988.

6/24/89

The Blue Jays sign Ozzie Virgil as a free agent. He plays in 12 games for the Jays on the major league level over the next season and a half is his career is over.
