Happy ’80s Birthday to Sandy Wihtol, who pitched for the Indians for three seasons and is the only player in history whose name begins with “Wih.”

The Cubs sign Jay Johnstone after he was released by the Dodgers.

Johnstone plays in Chicago through 1984 then finishes his career back in L.A. in 1985.

The Angels sign Greg Minton after he was released by the Giants.

He finishes his career in 1990 with the Angels. 

6/1/88

The Mariners sign Steve Balboni after he was released by the Royals a few days earlier. Balboni finishes the year in Seattle, then goes back to New York and wraps up his career with the Yankees.

Vance Law goes 1 for 5 with a double in his big league debut. 

He’d spend eleven seasons in the major leagues and make the 1988 All-Star team.

John Stuper gets the start and goes six in his big league debut for the Cardinals. 

He wins nine games and a ring in his rookie year. 

6/1/85 

Steve Shields goes 4.2 innings against the Pirates in his big league debut. He earns his first win eight days later and spends five years in the big leagues.

Ruben Sierra goes 2 for 3 with a double and a home run in his big league debut. 

Dude could always hit.

Paul Noce goes 1 for 4 in his big league debut. 

He plays 70 games for Chicago in 1987 and one for the Reds in 1990.

Bill Lee goes 3 for 3 as the Expos beat the Cardinals 7-6 in 12. A Warren Cromarte single drove in Andre Dawson, who went 4-5, with the winning run.

The Pirates beat the Mets 13-3, thanks in part to three errors by Mets SS Frank Taveras.
In the top of the 5th, a controversial play at 2nd had Pirates manager Chuck Tanner so upset he officially protested the game. Then his team scored 7 in the bottom of the frame including a grand slam by Dale Berra.

Joe Charboneau goes 0-3 against the Twins to drop his batting average to .214. The Indians send him down a few days later and he never makes another appearance in the big leagues.

Rickey steals two bases against the Red Sox. The two bags give him 51 for the season in 51 games.

Bob Welch fires a 1-hitter against Steve Carlton and the Phillies at Dodger Stadium.

Von Hayes’ 4th inning single is the only hit the Phillies can muster.

6/1/86

In his first start for his hometown team, Chris Welsh throws to 1st 17 times attempting to pick off Vince Coleman.

Coleman then steals 2nd but Chris got him later in the game.

Jim Morrison goes 3 for 5 with a slam and drives in seven in a 12-3 win over the Dodgers.

Phil Niekro earns his 314th career win, which gives him and his brother, Joe, the major league record of 530 combined victories, surpassing the mark set by the Perry brothers, Gaylord and Jim.

The Rangers release Jim Bibby and his career, the start of which was delayed by service in Vietnam, is over. He finishes with 111 wins.

6/1/88

The Padres select Andy Benes with the first overall pick in the MLB Draft. 

6/1/88

The Dodgers select a family friend of Tom Lasorda’s in the 62nd round of the draft.
