Happy ’80s Birthday to Jerry Dybzinski, who was born in Cleveland, went to Cleveland St. and broke in with the Indians in 1980.

One of 10 kids, he grew up 15 minutes from Cleveland Stadium and frequently had a large cheering section for home games.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Glenn Hoffman, who was selected by the Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 1976 draft and spent nine years in the big leagues with Boston and the Dodgers.

You also may have heard of his younger brother, Trevor.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Famer Tim Teufel.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Len Barker, who won 76 games over the course of his career, led the A.L. in strikeouts twice, and threw a perfect game for the Indians in 1981.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dan Gladden, who finished 4th in the 1984 N.L. Rookie of the Year balloting and won rings with the Twins in 1987 and 1991.

7/7/84

Mike Pagliarulo goes 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI against the Twins in his big league debut.

He’d spend eleven seasons in the major leagues and win a World Series with Minnesota in 1991.

Big Days

7/7/82

Don Sutton throws a 4-hit CG to beats the Cubs 5-1 and earn the 250th win of his career.

He’d finish with 324.

7/7/82

Harold Baines homers three times and drives in 6 in a 7-0 win over the Tigers.

That’s pretty good production out of the 6th spot in the batting order.

Bonus points for a Jim Leyland sighting.

7/7/82

Willie Mays, Barbara Eden, and Hank Aaron on Sutton promote the release of the Tron video game in New York because it was the ’80s.

7/7/85

Ken Griffey hits two homers and drives in 5 in a 14-2 Yankees win over the Twins.

The man could just hit.

7/7/86

Bill Wegman throws 11 shutout innings against the Angels and gets a no-decision. California scores three in the top of the 16th to win the game 3-1.

7/7/86
In Tony LaRussa’s first game as Oakland’s manager, Dave Stewart decides he is going to use his forkball more often, a pitch he had learned with the Dodgers in 1982 but had abandoned at the request of Rangers manager Doug Rader.

Stewart enters the game with an E.R.A. of 5.36, but he beats Roger Clemens and the Red Sox 6-4 to pick up his first win of the season.
Beginning with that start, Stew goes 9-5 the rest of the year and shaves nearly two runs off his E.R.A. He wins 20 games in each of the next four seasons.

7/7/87 (Actually 7/8/87)

In the second game of a day/night doubleheader that began at 11:15 pm, Steve Lake hits a 2-run homer at 2:33 in the morning off Matt Young to tie the game at 4-4. The Cardinals push a run across in the 10th to win it 5-4.

Fights

7/7/87

Eric Show hits Andre Dawson in the face with a pitch, touching off a bench-clearing brawl at Wrigley. Don’t mess with Hawk.

Deaths

We lost long-time Phillies coach Mike Ryan OTD in 2020.

Mike spent 11 seasons in the big leagues as a player and coached for the Pirates and Phillies from 1975 through 2005.
