Happy ’80s Birthday to pitcher Marty Bystrom, who was instrumental to the Phillies run at the N.L. East title in 1980.

The 22 year-old went 6-5 in AAA before being called up in September. Once reaching the big leagues, he went 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA, including a CG shutout in his first start.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jody Reed, who spent eleven years in the big leagues and was a doubles machine in his early years with the Red Sox.

After retiring, ha managed multiple teams in the minor leagues. 

Ken Kaiser was borm OTD in 1945. He called games in the big leagues from 1977 through 1999 and worked as a pro wrestles in the offseason during his minor league umpiring days. He passed away in 2017.

The Reds trade Dan Driessen to the Expos for Andy McGaffigan, He becomes the regular first baseman a few weeks later when Montreal deals Pete Rose to the Reds.

Steve Stone beats the Brewers 4-1. It’s his 14th straight win en route to the 1980 Cy Young Award. He goes from May 5th to July 31st without a loss.

Bowie Kuhn suspends Vida Blue for the rest of the season as a result of Blue being convicted on cocaine charges the previous November.

Blue returns to the big leagues in 1985 with the Giants.

Expos legend Pete Rose records the 3,052nd single of his career, thus tying Ty Cobb on the all-time list.

Pedro Guerrero goes 2 for 2 with two walks to extend his on-base streak of 14, setting a National League record. From July 23rd through the 26th, he hits two singles, three doubles, two homers, walks six times, and is hit by a pitch.

Wade Boggs goes 0 for 3 in Boston’s 6 – 2 win over Seattle to halt his hitting streak at 28 games, the longest in the major leagues since 1980.

Catfish Hunter, Ray Dandridge, and Billy Williams are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Michael Jack Schmidt appears in his 2,155th game as a 3rd baseman to set the all-time National League record.

He’d finish his career with 2,212 games played at 3rd.

Don Sutton and Larry Doby are inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Lee MacPhail, George Davis, and Joe Rogan.

The Braves release Gary Roenicke and his career is over. 

He plays twelve seasons in the big leagues and wins a ring with the Orioles in 1983.
