Happy ’80s Birthday to Jerry Augustine, who was born in Wisconsin, played college ball in Wisconsin, and spent his entire big league career with the Brewers.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Joe Oliver, who was a 2nd round draft pick in 1983 and made his big league debut in 1989. He singled off Mark Langston in his first at-bat.

Reds fans will also never forget his clutch walk-off single off Dennis Eckersley in Game 2 of the 1990 World Series that drove home Billy Bates.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Barry Lamar Bonds, who made his debut in 1986 with the Pirates and that’s all I’m going to say.

The Expos trade Skeeter Barnes and Dan Schatzeder to the Phillies for Tom Foley and Lary Sorensen.

The Expos drafted Schatzeder, traded him to Detroit, bought him from the Giants, then traded him to the Phillies. Kind of an abusive relationship.

The Cardinals sign Steve Lake as a free agent.

The Cubs released him earlier in the month after he refused a minor league assignment.

The Dodgers sign a 17-year-old free agent shortstop from San Pedro de Macoris.

Wilson Alvarez makes his big league debut for the Rangers and doesn’t record an out while allowing three runs.

He returns to the big leagues in 1991 with the White Sox and throws a no-hitter in his first start.

Francisco Cabrera goes 0 for 1 in his big league debut for Toronto.

He’s traded to Atlanta a month later and immediately begins watching tape of Stan Belinda.

George Brett signs a new contract that will pay him $1 million per season, then goes 2 for 4 against the White Sox to raise his average to .379. He would end the year at .390 and flirted with .400 until the final weeks of the season.

7/24/82

Rickey Henderson enters the day with 89 stolen bases. The Yankees and Tigers have 86 each.

Rickey steals two more bases.

7/24/84

Johnny Ray goes 5 for 6 with five singles in a Pirates 12-5 win over the Expos. The game is tied after nine and Pittsburgh scores eight in the top of the 11th inning.

7/24/86

Mike Scott strikes out 13 Phillies in seven innings en route to a 9-3 win.

7/24/86

Eric Davis goes 3 for 5 with a walk and 4 stolen bases against the Expos.

Davis stole a career-high 80 bags that year. Dude was a stud.
