Former outfielder Gary Woods was born OTD in 1953 and spent nine seasons in the big leagues with Oakland, Toronto, Houston, and the Cubs.
After retiring he earned his MBA and was active in youth baseball and scouted for the White Sox.
He passed away in 2015.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark Lee, who pitched in four seasons for the Brewers, Royals, and Orioles from 1988 through 1995. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Witt, who threw a perfect game on the final day of the 1984 season.

The Expos trade Greg Harris to the Padres for Al Newman. 

Harris goes 2-1 down the stretch and throws 5 1/3 scoreless in the World Series.

Cecil Fielder goes 1 for 1 with a single off Tim Birtsas in his big league debut. 

He hits .311 as a rookie, spends parts of four seasons with Toronto, and a season in Japan before returning to the U.S. and hitting bombs for the Tigers.

Cubs pitcher Lynn McGlothen enters his start against the Padres with a 6-7 record and an ERA of 5.76, thanks in part to lasting just an inning and a third in his previous start.
But on this day he’s the man, throwing a CG shutout against the Padres at Wrigley Field.

Lee Lacy goes 5 for 5 with a double, triple and 2 RBI in an 8-7 Pirates win over the Dodgers.

Charles Hudson comes within two outs of a no-hitter before Craig Reynolds breaks it up.

After missing a month with a knee injury, “Disco” Dan Ford goes 4 for 4 with 3 homers in a 4-2 Orioles win over the Mariners.

The Blue Jays trail the Mariners 3-1 after 8 and then drop an 11-spot on Seattle in the top of the 9th inning.

Lloyd Moseby and Jesse Barfield each have two hits in the inning. Toronto has 11 hits in the inning. Ten of them are singles.

Darryl Strawberry goes 3 for 5 with a grand slam and a three-run shot in a 16-4 Mets win over Atlanta.

Scattering seven hits, Ron Guidry wins his 12th straight, beating the Twins, 8 – 3. Don Mattingly has a two-run homer and a two-run double for the Yanks.

Neil Allen throws a 2-hit shutout against the Yankees while walking no one and striking out no one.

Don Mattingly ties a major league record when he makes 22 putouts in the Yankees’ 7-1 victory in the Metrodome.

David Ortiz once played an entire game at first base and recorded zero putouts.
