Happy Birthday to one of the more underrated sluggers of the 1980s.

From 1980 through 1984, Tony Armas averaged 33 homers, 101 RBI and a slugging % of nearly .500. Dude just quietly raked.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Joe Magrane, who was 3rd in the 1987 N.L. Rookie of the Year balloting and 4th in the 1989 Cy Young balloting.

Happy ’80s Birthday to 1986 A.L. Rookie of the Year Jose Canseco. Say what you will, the dude was never, ever boring.

7/2/84
The Cubs trade Dickie Noles to the Rangers for two PTBNL. Texas sends Tim Henry and Jorge Gomez to Chicago to complete the trade.

7/2/89
The Braves trade Dion James to the Indians for Oddibe McDowell.

They move Murph to RF and install McDowell in CF where he hits .304 and swiped 15 bags over the rest of the season.

7/2/89
The Braves trade Zane Smith to the Expos for Kevin Dean, Nate Minchey, and Sergio Valdez.

The Expos flip Smith to Pittsburgh the following season for an outfielder named Moises Alou.

Big Days

7/2/80

Ross Baumgarten prevents a homicide in the clubhouse and then throws a one-hitter.

Just another day in what was a pretty wild season on the South Side.

7/2/82
Tony Perez collects his 2,500th hit, a single off the Brewers Bob McClure.

He’d finish his career with 2,732.

7/2/85

George Brett goes 3 for 3 with 2 homers and 6 RBI in a 10-1 win over the Oakland A’s.

Brett would finish the season at .335 and finish 2nd in the A.L. MVP balloting to Don Mattingly.

7/2/85

Joe Niekro wins the 200th game of his career. The win makes Joe and Phil the 2nd brother combo to each have at least 200 victories, joining the Perry brothers.

7/2/87

Jim Eisenreich hits his first home run since 1982.

Eisenreich missed all of 1985 and 1986 while dealing with Tourrette Syndrome. Once he got it under control he had a nice career and the guy could always hit.

7/2/89

Robin Yount becomes the 5th youngest player to reach 2,500 hits.

He would get to 3,000 three years later.

Transactions

7/2/85

The California Angels release Steve Rogers. He signs with the White Sox and goes 1-2 in AAA before being released.

7/2/88
The Expos release Bob McClure.

He signs with the Mets then moves on to the Angels for 1989.
