Happy ’80s Birthday to Tony Walker, who appeared in 84 games for the 1986 Houston Astros. 

7/1/84

The Expos trade Chris Speier and cash to the St. Louis Cardinals for Mike Ramsey. 

St. Louis flips Speier to the Giants a few weeks later, while Ramsey finishes the season in Montreal. 

 

7/1/87

The Angels sign Tony Armas as a free agent.

He plays his final three seasons in California and retires after the 1989 season. 

7/1/89

The White Sox sign Richard Dotson as a free agent.

He goes 3-7 in 17 games, plays one more season in Kansas City and he’s done.

The Braves torch Joe Niekro and the Astros 13-4 on 15 hits.

Dale Murphy goes 3 for 5, while Chris Chambliss, Gary Matthews, Bob Horner, and Bruce Benedict each contribute two hits.

Jeff Burroughs also adds two hits and a three-run homer.

Mark Fidrych bests Dave Righetti in front of a S.R.O. crowd in Pawtucket in a battle of former AL Rookies of the Year.

Fidrych strikes out Butch Hobson for the final out in to complete the CG.

Orioles manager Earl Weaver moves his young 3rd baseman to shortstop.

The Brewers beat the Indians 11-10 on home runs by Cecil Cooper, Robin Yount, and Paul Molitor.

Bruce Bochy hits a walk off homer off Nolan Ryan for a 6-5 Padres win. It’s the only walk off dinger Ryan allowed in 807 appearances

7/1/87

Bob Sebra throws a complete game three-hitter, strikes out 14, and loses 1-0 to the Cubs.

Chicago pitched some kid named Maddux.

The Yankees release Paul Blair, whom they brought out of retirement the previous month to fill in for a depleted outfield. 

7/1/82

The Pirates release Willie Montanez.

He returns to Philadelphia, plays in 18 games, and he’s done. 

7/1/84

The Cardinals release Jim Bibby and his career is over.

Bibby didn’t make his debut until age 27 due to military service and won 19 games in 1974 and 1980. He finishes his career with 111 wins.

Paul Splittorff retires as the Royals all-time leader in wins with 166.
