Happy ’80s Birthday to 1982 NL Rookie of the Year Steve Sax! He won a World Series after playing just 31 regular season games and was the impetus for the Dodgers breaking up their vaunted 1970’s infield. All of it pales in comparison to his performance on The Simpsons.

The Reds signed Jeff Treadway as an amateur free agent. He makes his big-league debut in 1987 and is sold to Atlanta in 1989.

MLB owners take just 25 minutes to approve the sale of the White Sox to a group headed by Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn. Sox owner Bill Veeck had agreed to sell the team to Eddie DeBartolo but the deal was not approved.

The New York Yankees name Graig Nettles captain after an extensive study reveals it’s scientifically impossible to hit a baseball past him. He’s the first Yankee captain since Thurman Munson.

The Indians release Wayne Garland and his career is over. The righty signed a 10-year, $2.3 million free agent deal with Cleveland after going 20-7 with Baltimore in 1976, but tore his rotator cuff in 1978.

Deaths

We lost Art Fowler OTD in 2007. He pitched in the bigs for nine years and served as Billy Martin’s pitching coach in Detroit, Texas, New York and Oakland.
