Happy ’80s Birthday to Atlee Hammaker, who was drafted in the 1st round by the Royals in 1979 and dealt to the Giants in a trade that included Vida Blue. He enjoyed his best season in 1983 when he won 10 games and led the N.L. with an E.R.A. of 2.25.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Rob Dibble, who turns saved 67 games for the Reds between 1990 and 1992 and won a ring with the Reds in 1990.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tim Stoddard, who won an NCAA basketball title with North Carolina State and also a World Series with the Orioles. He is the only player to win both.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tim Barrett, who appeared in four games for the Expos in 1988.

Ted Cox was born OTD in 1955. He made his debut with Boston in 1977 and spent five years in the bigs with four teams. He passed away in 2020.

The Orioles trade Terry Kennedy to the San Francisco Giants for Bob Melvin. 

Kennedy spends his last three years in the bigs leagues in San Francisco while Melvin plays until 1994.

The Angels sign Ellis Valentine as a free agent. He hits .240 in one season in California and finishes up with the Rangers in 1985.

The Angels sign Ruppert Jones as a free agent. He spends his final three years in the big league with California and retires after the 1987 season.

The Pirates sign Bill Landrum as a free agent. He wins 13 games over three years in Pittsburgh and helps them reach the playoffs in 1990 and 1991.

Arbitrator Raymond Goetz concludes his hearing on the status of Carlton Fisk’s contract after the Red Sox missed a deadline to offer both he and Fred Lynn new deals. Boston cut their losses with Lynn and sent him to the Angels before his hearing.

Prosecutors in Houston reduce charges against Mets pitcher Ron Darling from felony assault to misdemeanor assault stemming from an incident in June at a Houston nightclub. Tim Teufel still faces felony charges and is scheduled to go on trial.

Orel Hershiser is named A.P. Male Athlete of the Year after leading the Dodgers to a World Series title and throwing 59-straight scoreless innings along the way.
