Happy ’80s Birthday to Matt Stark, who appeared in 13 games for the Blue Jays and White Sox between 1987 and 1990.

Dave Smith was born on this day in 1955. He saved 216 games for the Astros and Cubs during his 13-year career and finished 5th in the 1980 Rookie of the Year balloting. He passed away in 2008.

Johnny Oates was born OTD in 1946. He spent 11 years in the big leagues with the Orioles, Braves, Phillies, Dodgers, and Yankees and later managed the Rangers and the Orioles. He passed away in 2004.

Ricky Adams was born OTD in 1959. He was a first-round draft pick in 1977 and played in 120 games for the Angels and Giants between 1982 and 1985.  He passed away in 2001 after battling cancer.

Jose Uribe was born OTD in 1959, who spent ten years in the bigs with the Cardinals, Giants, and Astros. He was killed in a car crash in 2006.

The dismantling of the Big Red Machine continues as the Reds trade Cesar Geronimo to the Royals

The Astros sign Tony Scott to a three-year free agent deal worth $1.2 million. Houston acquired Scott in June of 1981 in exchange for Joaquin Andujar.

The Blue Jays sign catcher Jay Schroeder to a one-year deal. Schroeder was the #3 pick in the 1979 draft, but 1983 will be his final season in the minor leagues. He decides to play football after batting .202 in the Carolina League.

The White Sox sign Jerry Royster as a free agent. He plays in 54 games and is traded to the Yankees in August.

1/21/87

The Braves sign  Gary Roenicke as a free agent. He plays in 116 games over two seasons in Atlanta and retires after the 1988 season.

The Mets release Bruce Bochy. He signs with San Diego and stays in their organization through 1988 before beginning his managerial career.
