The Braves trade Craig McMurtry to Toronto for Damaso Garcia and Luis Leal. Garcia missed the entire 1987 season with knee problems and played in just 101 games over the next two seasons before retiring.

The Angels sign Dave Rader as a free agent. They release him in April and his career is over. 

2/2/84

The Expos sign Derrel Thomas as a free agent. He hits .255 in 108 games and finishes the season with the Angels. 

2/2/85

The Mets sign Rick Anderson as a free agent. He makes his big league debut the following season and spends three years in the major leagues. 

2/2/87

The Tigers sign Nate Snell as a free agent. He goes 1-2 in 22 games for Detroit before signing with the Reds and spending 1988 in the minor leagues. 

2/2/88

The Rangers sign Ed Vande Berg as a free agent. He splits the year between Texas and Double-A Oklahoma City and spends the next four years in the minor leagues before retiring. 

Transactions

2/2/81

The Angels release Dave Skaggs and his career is over. Skaggs spends four years in the big leagues with Baltimore and California.

2/2/82

The White Sox select Joel Skinner from the Pirates as compensation for losing Ed Farmer. Skinner becomes the first-ever Free Agent Compensation pick.

2/2/83

The Angels release Steve Renko. He signs with the Royals and goes 6-11 in 1983 before retiring. 

2/2/88

The Rangers release Larry McWilliams. He signs with the Cardinals and wins six games before moving on to the Phillies in 1989.

2/2/87

Dennis Leonard announces his retirement. Over his 12-year career, Leonard won 20 games three times and led the AL in games started three times. 

2/2/89

Bill White succeeds Chub Feeney as president of the National League. White becomes the first African-American to be named president of either league and the highest-ranking black executive in the four major sports.
