Happy ’80s Birthday to the sweet swinging Fred Lynn, who won Rookie of the Year AND MVP in 1975 with the Red Sox.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bake McBride, who won the Rookie of the Year award in 1974 with the Cardinals. His 3-run homer in Game 1 of the 1980 World Series gave the Phillies a big boost en route to their first championship.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Joe Klink, who spent five years in the big leagues and won a career-high 10 games for the 1991 Oakland A’s. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Freddie Toliver, who spent seven years in the big leagues with five teams. Freddie won a career-high 7 games in 1988 for the Twins. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Don Welchel, who appeared in 13 games for the Orioles in 1982 and ’83.

In desperate need of starting pitching, the Expos deal Tom Nieto and Jeff Reardon to the Twins for Alfredo Cardwood, Neal Heaton, Yorkis Perez and Jeff Reed. Montreal wins 91 games but the Twins win the World Series, with Reardon earning 31 saves.

The Royals trade Dave Cochrane to the Mariners for minor leaguer Ken Spratke.

The Royals sign Dave Frost as a free agent. He wins 6 games for Kansas City and spends 1983 in the minor leagues before retiring.

The Mets sign Ed Hearn as a free agent. He makes his big league debut in 1986 and is sent to Kansas City in the David Cone deal the following year.

The Orioles sign Aurelio Rodriguez as a free agent. He’s released in August and signs with the White Sox who are defeated by the Orioles in the 1983 ALCS.

The Giants sign Chris Jones as a free agent. He appears in three games with the Giants, spends all of 1987 in the minor leagues and retires.

The Giants sign Randy Kutcher as a free agent. He makes his big league debut with the Giants and spends five years in the major leagues with the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants sign Mike LaCoss as a free agent. He wins 47 games over the next six seasons in San Francisco and retires.
