No non-knuckleball pitcher has made that many starts since. Charlie Hough started 40 games in 1987.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Roy Howell, who spent 11 years in the bigs with Toronto, Texas, and the Brewers and was a All-Star in 1978.

The Reds trade Ray Knight to the Astros for Cesar Cedeno. The move opens up a spot at 3rd base for a dude named Bench.

The Giants trade Rob Deer to the Brewers in exchange for minor leaguers Dean Freeland and Eric Pilkington. In five seasons in Milwaukee, Deer hits 137 homers, walks 333 times, and punches out 823 times.

The Expos sign Rex Hudler as a free agent. Given regular playing time in 1988, Hud hits .273.

The Phillies sign David Palmer as a free agent. goes 7-9 in his lone season in Philadelphia and finishes his career with Detroit in 1989.

The Cardinals release Steve Braun and his career is over. He finishes his 15-year run with 989 hits and a ring. 

12/18/86

After three seasons in San Diego, which included a World Series appearance, the Padres release Graig Nettles. Nettles also got Bruce Springsteen in the bottom of the 9th to win the game, but not even that was enough to save his job.
