Happy ’80s Birthday to Jay Bell, who spent 18 years in the bigs and won a Gold Glove in 1993 with the Pirates and a ring with the Diamondbacks in 2001.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mike Henneman, who was named The Sporting News A.L. Rookie of the Year in 1987 and saved 155 games for the Tigers between 1988 and 1995.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bob Sykes. Sykes went 6-10 in 1980 but threw back-to-back CG shutouts in August. He went 2-0 in 1981 and the Cardinals traded him to the Yankees for a minor league outfielder named Willie McGee.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Adam Peterson, who won five games for the White Sox and Padres over five seasons.

Bob Sebra was born OTD in 1961. He made his debut with the Rangers in 1985 and spending six years in the bigs, winning 15 games. He passed away in 2020.

The Montreal Expos trade Steve Ratzer and cash to the Mets for Frank Taveras.

The White Sox trade Rod Allen, Todd Cruz, and Jim Essian to the Mariners for Tom Paciorek. Wimpy becomes a Chicago institution.

The Mets trade Dan Boitano and Doug Flynn to the Rangers for Jim Kern. 

Two months later the Mets flip Kern to the Reds in the George Foster deal.

The Angels trade Brian Harper to the Pirates for Tim Foli.

The Rangers trade PsTBNL to the Cubs for Dickie Noles. Texas sent Tim Henry and Jorge Gomez to Chicago to complete the trade.

The Phillies trade John Denny and Jeff Gray to the Reds for Gary Redus and Tom Hume. Denny wins 11 games in Cincinnati and is done.

The Red Sox trade Mark Clear to the Brewers for Ed Romero.

The Tigers trade a PTBNL, Juan Berenguer, and Bob Melvin to the Giants for Eric King, Dave LaPoint, and Matt Nokes. Detroit sent Scott Medvin to San Francisco to complete the trade.

The Orioles trade Gary Roenicke to the Yankees for Rich Bordi and Rex Hudler. Bordi was traded at the winter meetings four times in five years.

The Dodgers trade Steve Yeager to the Mariners for P Ed Vande Berg. Yeager hits .208 in Seattle in 1986 and retires.

All Kevin All the Time: The Mets trade Kevin Mitchell, Kevin Brown, and Kevin Armstrong to the Padres for Kevin McReynolds. There were people not named Kevin in the deal but who cares about them?

The Yankees trade Tom Barrett and Mike Easler to the Phillies for Jeff Knox and Charles Hudson.

A three-team deal sends Jesse Orosco, Alfredo Griffin, and Jay Howell to the Dodgers, Matt Young and Bob Welch to Oakland, and Jack Savage, Wally Whitehurst, and Kevin Tapani to the Mets. Worked out well for the A’s and Dodgers, who faced each other in the 1988 World Series.

The Angels sign John D’Acquisto as a free agent.

The Dodgers sign Mark Belanger as a free agent. The Blade hits .240 in his final season.

Fred Lynn signs a free agent deal with the Orioles. He spends three and a half seasons in Baltimore before being dealt to Detroit.

12/11/89

The Royals sign free agent Mark Davis, making them the first team ever to have both defending Cy Young Award winners on their staff. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out.
