Happy ’80s Birthday to Steve Renko, who was a 24th-round draft pick and spent 15 years in the big leagues, winning 134 games along the way. He also played QB at Kansas where he used to hand the ball to some dude named Sayers.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jeff Bettendorf, who pitched in three games for the 1984 A’s.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Paul Assenmacher, who made his debut in 1987 and pitched for 14 years, winning 61 games and recording 56 saves.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Gil Reyes, who made his debut with the 1983 Dodgers and bounced back and forth between the majors and the minors until 1991. He later managed in the Mexican League.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Rick Wrona, who spent six years in the bigs with the Cubs and Brewers.

The Red Sox trade Rick Burleson and Butch Hobson to the Angels for Carney Lansford, Rick Miller, and Mark Clear.

The Padres trade Ozzie Smith to the Cardinals for Garry Templeton. The deal isn’t finalized for a few months due to Ozzie’s contract situation, but it was the final piece of the puzzle for Whitey Herzog’s remake of the Cardinals.

The Royals trade Clint Hurdle to the Reds for Scott Brown. Hurdle spends one season in the Cincinnati organization and signs with the Mets for 1983.

The Astros trade Danny Heep to the Mets for Mike Scott, who wins a Cy Young a few years later.

The Expos trade Gary Carter to the New York Mets in exchange for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham, and Floyd Youmans. Montreal weeps.

The Braves trade Steve Bedrosian and Milt Thompson to the Phillies for Pete Smith and Ozzie Virgil. Bedrock wins a Cy Young in Philadelphia.

Oakland trades Tim Conroy and Mike Heath to the Cardinals for Joaquin Andujar.

The Royals acquire OF Danny Tartabull and Rick Luecken from the Mariners for Scott Bankhead, Steve Shields, and Mike Kingery.

The Dodgers send Greg Brock to the Brewers for pitchers Tim Leary and Tim Crews.

The White Sox trade Floyd Bannister and Dave Cochrane to the Royals for Chuck Mount, John Davis, Greg Hibbard, and Melido Perez.

The Rangers sign Tom Paciorek as a free agent. 

Wimpy hits .286 in two seasons in Texas and retires.

Free agent 2B Willie Randolph signs with the Dodgers and takes the place of Steve Sax, who left the Dodgers to sign with the Yankees.

The White Sox select a young OF named Bobby Bonilla from the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft. Bonilla plays 75 games for Chicago before being dealt back to Pittsburgh.

The Expos select Jeff Parrett from the Brewers in the Rule 5 draft.

The Padres select Bip Roberts from the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft.

The Seibu Lions (Japan Pacific) purchase George Vukovich from Cleveland Indians. 

Vuke spends two seasons in Japan and signs with Detroit for 1988. He spends the year in Teiple-A and retires. 

Deaths

We lost Billy DeMars OTD in 2020. He spent three seasons in the big leagues as a player and was a long-time minor league manager and big league coach.
