Bill Campbell was born OTD in 1948. Soup led the league in games finished twice, appearances twice, and saves once over his 15-year career.

In 1977, he went 17-5 and threw 167.2 innings out of the pen for the Twins. 

He passed away in 2023. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Simba!

Dude could just hit. From 1971 through 1983, he hit .294 with an average of 17 homers and 90 RBI per season while playing 143 games a year, mostly catching on the turf at Busch Stadium.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Steve Swisher, who was a first-round pick out of Ohio University in 1973 and made his big league debut a year later. He spent nine years in the major leagues with the Cubs, Cardinals, and Padres.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Kevin Saucier, who made his debut with the Phillies in 1978 and won a World Series with them in 1980. He finished his big league career with the Tigers in 1982

Happy ’80s Birthday to Junior Kennedy, who was drafted #10 overall in 1968 by the Baltimore Orioles and spent seven years in the bigs with the Reds and Cubs. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to John Moses, who spent 11 years in the bigs with the Mariners, Twins, and Tigers and nearly 20 as a manager or coach in the majors and minor leagues.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Matt Young, who made the All-Star team as a rookie in 1983 and was a member of the 1989 World Series champion A’s. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jim Aducci, who played in 70 games over four seasons for the Cardinals, Brewers, and Phillies. His son, Jim, played five seasons in the majors as well.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Stan Clarke, who pitched in 50 games for Toronto, Seattle, St. Louis, and Kansas City from 1983 through 1990.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Vance Lovelace, who played in the 1975 Little League World Series and appeared in 9 games over three seasons for the Angels and Mariners.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Deion Sanders, who is the only athlete to play in a World Series game and a Super Bowl. He led the league in triples in 1992 and he only played in 97 games.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chris Wheeler, who has been calling Phillies games since 1977.

The Indians trade Phil Niekro to the Blue Jays for a PTBNL and minor leaguer Darryl Landrum. Toronto sends Don Gordon to Cleveland to complete the trade. 

Niekro goes 0-2 in three starts and is released. He signs with Atlanta to finish his career.

Royals closer Dan Quisenberry goes 5 innings in relief against the Blue Jays, who eventually win in 14 innings on a Steve Braun pinch-hit single off Rawley Eastwick.

8/9/81

Gary Carter homers twice to earn MVP honors as the N.L. beats the A.L. 5-4 in the All-Star game.

8/9/82

George Brett goes 4 for 5 and three of his teammates each collect three hits as the Royals hammer the Indians 12-2. Kansas City bangs out 20 hits in the game.

8/9/84

Greg Brock’s solo homers stands up as Dodgers rookie Orel Hershiser shuts out the Atlanta Braves 1-0 for his 8th win of the season.

8/9/84

 The Pirates score 8 runs on 5 hits in the 2nd inning of an 11-0 win over the Mets. Johnny Ray goes 4-for-6 & drives in two.

8/9/87

Darrell Evans walks and homers as part of a 9-run 4th inning in a 15-4 Tigers win over the Yankees.

8/9/87

Detroit beat the Yankees 15-4 and Rick Cerone pitches and catches in the same game for the second time in 1987.

8/9/88
Don Sutton makes the final start of his big league career.

The Dodgers release him the following day and his career is over. He finishes with 324 wins and is elected to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

8/9/89

Murph homers twice and drives in 5 in a 6-3 Braves win over the Dodgers. Murph had 32 games in his career in which he hit two or more homers. 

Transactions

8/9/83

The Giants sign Randy Lerch as a free agent. He goes 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA over the remainder of the season and spends 1984 in San Francisco before finishing his career back in Philadlphia.

8/9/84

The A’s release Mike Torrez and his major league career is over. He finishes with 185 wins over 18 seasons, including a ring with the 1977 Yankees.
