The one and only Tug McGraw was born on this day in 1944. He racked up 180 saves over 19 years for the Mets and Phillies and won two rings.

 

Happy ’80s Birthday to former Twins pitcher Roger Erickson, who won 14 games as a rookie in 1978 but wasn’t able to replicate that success. He won 29 games over the next seven seasons.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to first-round draft pick Dave Chalk, who spent nine years in the big leagues and was a two-time All-Star.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Renie Martin, who won 10 games for the 1980 Royals and spent six seasons in the bigs with KC, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Scott Brown, who went 1-0 in 10 games for the 1981 Reds and once allegedly went to a sporting goods store looking to buy curveballs. 

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Steve Baker, who won seven games over four seasons for Detroit, Oakland, and St. Louis.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Willie Mueller, who went 1-0 in six games for the Brewers in 1978 and 1981.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Dave Smith, who appeared in five games for the Angels in 1984 and ’85. 

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Ricky Seilheimer, who was drafted by the White Sox in the first round in 1979 and played in 21 games for the Sox in 1980.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Randy O’Neal, who was drafted five times by five teams and finally signed with the Tigers in 1981. He spent seven years in the big leagues and won a ring with Detroit in 1984.

The White Sox trade a PTBNL, Bambi Mesa, Ron Perry, and cash to the Twins for Jerry Koosman. Chicago sends Randy Johnson (Not that one) to Minnesota to complete the deal.

8/30/82

The Astros trade Don Sutton to Milwaukee for PsTBNL and cash. Milwaukee sends Kevin Bass, Frank DiPino, and Mike Madden to Houston to complete the deal. Sutton beats the Orioles on the last day of the season to get the Brewers into the playoffs.

8/30/87

The Padres trade Storm Davis to the A’s for PsTBNL. Oakland sends Dave Leiper and Rob Nelson to San Diego to complete the deal. Davis doesn’t help Oakland reach the playoffs in 1987, but he wins 35 games for them over the next seasons.

The Braves trade Gene Garber to the Royals for a BTBNL. KC sends Terry Bell to Atlanta to complete the deal. Garber appears in 39 games between 1987 and 1988 before his career is over.

The Yankees trade Ken Phelps to Oakland for Scott Holcomb.

The Cubs trade a PTBNL, Darrin Jackson, and Calvin Shiraldi to the Padres for Luis Salazar and Marvell Wynne. Chicago sends Phil Stephenson to San Diego to complete the deal.

5/27/82

Mark Eichhorn gets roughed up by the Orioles in his big league debut. He returns to the majors in 1986 and wins 14 games to finish 3rd in the Rookie of the Year balloting.

Taiwan beats a team from Tampa to win the Little League World Series. The Tampa squad, from Belmont Heights, features future major leaguers Gary Sheffield and Derek Bell as well as Team USA star Ty Griffin.

8/30/82

Braves leave 18 on base and still beat the Phillies 11-9 in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. Glenn Hubbard goes 4-for-7 and Steve Bedrosian throws four scoreless innings in relief to get the win.

Dave Dravecky allows just one run over 11 innings and gets a no-decision against the Pirates. San Diego wins the game 2-1 in 13.

Dave Bergman homers twice and drives in five in a 13-2 Giants win over Montreal.

Jim Rice sets a dubious record by grounding into his 33rd double play of the season

8/30/85

Cesar Cedeno homers in his first at-bat after coming over to the Cardinals in a trade with the Reds.

He hits .434 in 28 games after the trade and helps St. Louis reach the World Series.

Kirby Puckett goes 6-for-6 with 2 dingers and 4 RBI in a 10-6 Twins win over the Brewers

Kent Tekulve becomes just the second pitcher in major league history (Hoyt Wilhelm) to appear in 1,000 games

8/30/88

Rob Deer homers twice and drives in five in a 6-2 win over Toronto. Dude could hit bombs.

8/30/88

Dave Martinez singles to CF off Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser to score Tim Raines in the bottom of the 5th inning. Hershiser wouldn’t surrender another run for the rest of the season.

8/30/89

Jose DeLeon throws 11 innings of one-hit shutout baseball against the Reds and gets a no-decision as Cincinnati wins the game 2-0 in 13 innings. The Cardinals left 16 men on base.

8/30/82

The White Sox purchase Warren Brusstar from the Phillies.

8/30/82

The Braves release Al Hrabosky. He signs with the White Sox and sends 1983 in the minor leagues but his major league career is over.

Managerial Changes

8/30/84

The Expos fire manager Bill Virdon and replace him with Jim Fanning. It’s Virdon’s last managerial job. He finishes with 921 career victories.
