Garry Maddox goes 5-for-6 in an 11-9 win over the Braves.

Dennis Lamp takes a no-hitter into the 9th inning when it’s broken up by Robin Yount. Lamp gets three straight groundouts but Yount scores and Lamp wins the game 5-1 on a one-hitter.

Bob Horner homers twice and drives in five but the Braves still fall to the Phillies 11-9.

The Louisville Redbirds become the first minor league team to draw one million fans in a season.

Don Mattingly goes 5-for-6 against the Mariners, which isn’t that big of a deal because Mattingly went 5-for-6 damn-near every day of the 1984 season.

Dwight Gooden beats the Padres 9-3 to become the youngest 20-game winner in MLB history. He finishes the year with a 24-4 record.

Mark McGuire hits his first home run. He’d hit 49 the following year and take home Rookie of the Year honors.

Fernando beats the Mets 3-1 and strikes out 13 because Fernando.

8/25/89

Gary Redus hits for the cycle in a 12-3 win over the Reds. It’s the 19th time a Bucco to turns the trick.

Transactions

8/25/82

The Yankees release Rodney Scott. He returns to Montreal for 1983 but spends the year in the minor leagues and his career is over.

8/25/87

The Blue Jays release Gary Lavelle. He finishes the season with Oakland and goes into coaching where he built a powerhouse in the high school ranks.

Fights

8/25/80

Joe Ferguson leans across the plate during an intentional walk attempt and singles to right, which pisses off Tug McGraw.

Tugger comes up and in to the next hitter, Bill Russell, and the benches empty.

Injuries

8/25/80

Ruppert Jones crashes into the outfield wall and suffers a separated shoulder and a severe concussion.

He misses the rest of the season and the effects lasted for years as he detailed in his book.

8/25/82

Tony Gwynn breaks his wrist diving for a fly ball. He misses just three weeks and hits .348 for the rest of the year, He finishes the season with a .289 batting average, the only year he doesn’t hit .300 but he had a good excuse.
