Happy ’80s Birthday to Milt May, who made his debut with the 1970 Pirates, won a wing the following year, and spent 15 years in the big leagues. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Greg Gross who spent 17 seasons in the big leagues and was an outstanding pinch-hitter. Greg won a ring with the 1980 Phillies and hit .750 in the NLCS that year. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Pete Mackanin, who spent nine years in the big leagues with four teams and later managed the Phillies.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Gregg Jefferies, whose rookie card was going to make us all rich.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dave Anderson, who played ten years in the big leagues and won a ring with the 1988 Dodgers. He was on deck in Game One when he was lifted for a pinch-hitter named Kirk Gibson. 

Happy ’80s Birthday to Scott Anderson, who pitched in the big leagues in parts of three seasons for the Rangers, Expos, and Royals.

The Indians trade Bert Blyleven to the Twins for a PTBNL, Jay Bell, Curt Wardle, and Jim Weaver. Minnesota sends Rich Yett to Cleveland to complete the trade.

The Expos trade Dan Driessen to the Giants for Bill Laskey and Scot Thompson.

The Yankees sign Jose Rijo as an amateur free agent. They trade him to Oakland in 1984 in a deal that nets them Rickey. 

8/1/87

Jeff Montgomery throws two scoreless innings against the Giants in his big league debut. 

Cincinnati trades him to the Royals the following spring and he saves 304 games over the next 12 seasons.

Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson are inducted into the HOF.

Between them, they collected 6,714 hits, 1,341 homers, 4,109 RBI, a Rookie of the Year Award, three MVP Awards, three rings and 39 All-Star Game appearances.

Aside from that they didn’t accomplish much.

Rick Lysander throws an 11-hit shutout against the A’s.

No big deal.

8/1/84

Mike Schmidt, Garry Maddox, and Al Holland make a cameo as constructions workers on “One Life to Live.”

8/1/85

Vince Coleman steals two bases against the Cubs to runs his season total to 74, setting a new rookie stolen base record. Juan Samuel set the previous mark of 72 in 1984.

8/1/86

Bert Blyleven becomes the 10th player to reach 3000 strikeouts when he fans Oakland’s Mike Davis. Blyleven strikes out 15 in the game.

8/1/87

Dave Stewart goes the distance and strikes out 14 in a 3-2 Oakland win over the Twins.

8/1/87

Andre Dawson hits three home runs, his 29th, 30th, and 31st, and drives in all five Chicago runs as the Cubs beat the Phillies, 5 – 3.

8/1/89

Kevin McReynolds hits for the cycle and drives in 6 in an 11-0 Mets win over the Cardinals.

8/1/93

Reggie is inducted into the Hall of Fame.
