Gary Redus goes 0-for-3 against the Dodgers in his big-league debut. He goes 2-for-5 the following day and plays until 1994, including a 4th place finish in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1983.

Danny Tartabull makes his big-league debut as a pinch-runner against the Royals. He collects his first hit a few days later and hits 263 homers over 14 major league seasons.

Dave Valle makes his debut as a defensive replacement against the Royals. Valle spends 13 years in the major leagues as a defense-first catcher and retires after 1996.

Steve McCatty goes the distance in a 5-2 win over the Orioles. It’s Oakland’s record-setting 78th complete game of the season. They’d finish the season with 94 CGs.

Bobby Bonds homers twice and drives in five in a 10-0 Cubs win over the Cardinals. The man could hit.

Jason Thompson hits his 30th home run of the season in a 9 – 5 win over the Mets, becoming just the 8th player in history to hit 30 home runs in a season in each league. Thompson hit 31 home runs for the Tigers in 1977.

Dwight Gooden throws a one-hit shutout and strikes out 11 against the Cubs. In September of 1984, when most rookies are wearing down, Gooden goes 4-1 with a 1.29 E.R.A. He strikes out 62 batters in 42 innings and the league hits .164 against him.

Bobby Grich leads the way with a 4-for-5 night as the Angels bang out 19 hits and 16 runs against the White Sox. Every Angels starter gets at least one hit. Geoff Zahn gives up seven runs in 7 2/3 innings of work and gets a win.

Dave Parker goes 3-for-5 with two dingers and 5 RBI but the Reds lose to the Cubs 9-7. Cobra can only do so much.

Floyd Youmans allows just one hit and strikes out 10 in 8 innings of work. Unfortunately for Youmans, the one hit is a first-inning RBI double off the bat of Mike Aldrete and Mike Krukow throws a two-hit shutout to lead the Giants to a 1-0 win.

Pittsburgh pitcher Jeff Robinson allows a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Ryne Sandberg in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game against the Cubs at 3. He then homers off Lee Smith in the 9th to give the Pirates the win.

Gregg Jefferies homers twice and drives in five in a 13-1 win over the Cardinals and we all bought a few more of his rookie cards.

The Orioles strike out 16 times but still manage to score eight runs and beat the Rangers 8-3. Mike Devereaux goes 3-for-5 with a dinger and 5 RBIs to lead the O’s.
