Happy ’80s Birthday to The Cowboy, Jeff Brantley, who led the majors (tie) in saves in 1996 with 44 with the Reds and currently broadcasts Reds games.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jamie Nelson, who appeared in 40 games for the 1983 Mariners.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Chris Green, who appeared in four games with the 1984 Pirates.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tim Birtsas, who made his debut with the A’s in 1985 and was traded to the Reds along with Jose Rijo in exchange for Dave Parker. Birtsas and the Reds beat Oakland in the 1990 World Series.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tom Dozier, who pitched in four games for the 1986 A’s.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Rob Richie, who made his debut with the Tigers in 1989 and hit .265 in 19 games before retiring to pursue a career as a probation officer.

Bud Black throws a wild pitch and allows an RBI single to Rick Miller before being pulled. Tough debut, but he had a nice career as a player and he’s a fine manager.

Dan Gladden goes 0-for-2 against the Reds in his big-league debut. He goes 3-for-5 a few days later and enjoys an 11-year career, including winning a ring in 1987 and 1991 with the Twins.

Mike Greenwell makes his big-league debut in the 2nd game of a doubleheader as a defensive replacement for Jim Rice. All the dude did from then on was hit. He finished his career with a .303 lifetime average.

Damon Berryhill goes 1-for-2 with a single off Cincinnati’s Rob Murphy in his big-league debut. He spends 12 years in the major leagues and appears in the postseason three times.

Erik Hanson throws 7 2/3 innings and allows two unearned runs in his big-league debut. He becomes the first Mariners righty to strike out 200 batters in a season and wins 89 games over 11 seasons.

Mike Harkey allows three runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Phillies in his big-league debut. He spends eight years in the major leagues and wins 36 games for five teams.

Dante Bichette goes 0-for-1 against the Royals in his big-league debut. He collects his first hits a few days later and hits 274 homers over 14 years in the major leagues.

Jim Slaton takes a no-hitter into the 9th inning before it’s broken up. He and the Brewers beat the Twins 5-3.

Roy Smalley homers twice and drives in six as the Yankees beat the Royals 18-7.

Larry Parrish goes 3-4 and drives in 6 of the Rangers’ 7 runs in a 7-3 win over the Twins. All he did was hit.

Kevin McReynolds goes 5-for-5 and scores twice in a 15-11 Padres win over the Reds

Despite allowing a run in the 4th inning, Reds rookie starter Jeff Russell takes a no-hitter into the 8th in San Francisco before Joel Youngblood’s double breaks it up. 

Dave Bergman then homers and the Giants win the game 3-2.

Willie McGee goes 5-for-5 and scores twice in a 6-5 win over the Phillies. Willie could hit.

Dave Parker homers twice and drives in five in an 11-2 Cincinnati win over the Cubs.

Carlton Fisk hits the 300th home run of his Hall of Fame career.

Tommy Hinzo, Joe Carter, and Mel Hall combine to go 13-for-18 with 7 RBI as the Indians beat the Red Sox 15-2.

9/5/88

Making his Astros debut, Bob Forsch shuts out the Reds and delivers a three-run double in a 3-0 Houston win. Forsch was acquired at the end of August in exchange for Denny Walling.

George Bamberger announces he’ll step down as Brewers manager after Milwaukee’s game on September 7th. Buck Rodgers takes over and pilots the team until mid-1982.
