Happy Birthday to Michael Jack Schmidt!

Happy ’80s Birthday to Len Matuszek, who is one of 15 MLB players to emerge from Cincinnati Moeller High School, including two HOFers. That’s a pretty solid program

Happy ’80s Birthday to Bob Veselic was born OTD in 1955. He appeared in six games for the Twins in 1980 and 1981 and also pitched in the Senior League. He passed away in 1995.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Don Schulze, who pitched in the big leagues for six seasons and spent another three in Japan. He has been a minor league coach since 2006.

Rickey Henderson goes 3-for-4 with four stolen bases in a 7-4 win over Milwaukee. He finishes with a league-leading 100 SBs, the first of seven-straight years in which he leads the league.

The A’s record 8 straight singles in the bottom of the first, but lose the game 9-5 to the White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader. Rickey starts it off with an infield single.

Phillies prospect Ryne Sandberg collects his first hit, a single off Chicago’s Mike Krukow. They should hold onto that kid. He’s got a future.

Carlton Fisk homers twice and drives in five in a 10-3 win over Oakland. It is one of 24 two-homer games for Fisk.

Phil Niekro shuts out the Giants on two hits, 7 – 0, to push the Braves back into a first-place tie with the Dodgers in the NL West. In seven starts in September and October, Niekro goes 4-1 with a 3.04 E.R.A.

The Cardinals clinch the N.L. East. It’s their first title since division play began in 1969. They would beat Atlanta in the N.L.C.S. and Milwaukee in the World Series.

Tim Raines becomes the first player since Ty Cobb to steal 70 bases and drive in 70 runs in the same season.

Jim Beattie fires the first one-hitter in Mariners’ history, beating Kansas City. U.L. Washington’s single in the 3rd inning is the only baserunner allowed by Beattie.

Jack Morris beats the Orioles to become a 20-game winner for the first time in his career. He would win 20 again in 1986 and 1992

Jamie Quirk hits a walk-off pinch-hit dinger off Ron Davis in his only at bat for the Indians. He’s released a few days later and re-signs with the Royals.

Glenn Wilson homers twice and drives in five but the Phillies lose to the Cubs 9-7.

9/27/86

Jack Morris shuts out the Yankees, 1 – 0, in 10 innings, raising his record to 20-8. It’s his second of three 20-win seasons (1983, 1992)

Floyd Youmans allows just two hits and strikes out 15 Phillies but gets a loss as Don Carman, Tom Hume, and Steve Bedrosian shut out the Expos 1-0.

Candy Maldanado homers and drives in six in a 15-6 Giants win over Atlanta.

Phil Niekro, recently released by the Blue Jays, pitches the final game of his career after being picked up by the Braves. It doesn’t go well but no one cares because Knucksie.

The Commissioner’s Office announcer that MLB has surpassed the 50-million mark in attendance for the first time.

Ernie Whitt homers twice and drives in six in a 15-9 Jays win over Boston.

The A’s clinch the A.L. West for the second year in a row.

The Giants clinch the N.L. West for the second time in the last three years.
