Happy ’80s Birthday to Dennis Lamp, who was the starter for the Cubs in the 23-22 game against the Phillies. Bad day but he had 80-grade facial hair.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Pete Harnisch, who made his debut in 1988 with the Orioles before going to Houston in the Glenn Davis deal. He won a career-high 16 games for the Astros in 1993 and 111 over his career.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jim Rooker, who pitched in the big leagues for 13 years and called Pirates games for 13 years.

The Royals trade Darryl Motley to the Braves in exchange for Steve Shields. Motley plays in 11 games for Atlanta in 1986 and 1987 and his major league career is over.

9/23/86

The Rangers sign a 16-year-old lefty from Maracaibo, Venezuela. He’d throw a no-hitter in his 2nd MLB start, but he did it for the White Sox.

9/23/87

The Braves sign an old friend who had been released by the Blue Jays a month earlier.

Big Days

9/23/82

9/23/83

Steve Carlton wins his 300th game, a 6-2 win over the Cardinals. He would finish his career with 329.

9/23/83

Steve Howe is suspended after missing the club’s flight to Atlanta and refusing to take a urinalysis upon his arrival. Howe, who has 18 saves and a 1.44 ERA despite spending part of the season in rehab, will not be eligible for post-season play.

9/23/84

Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager to win 100 games in each league as the Tigers hit the century mark in wins.

Gary Gaetti homers twice and drives in six in a 9-6 Twins win over the Royals.

9/23/87

9/23/87

Bill Madlock collects his 2,000th career hit as the Tigers beat Boston 4 – 0, on Doyle Alexander’s two-hitter.

9/23/88

Jose Canseco steals two bases against the Brewers to become the first 40/40 man in major league history.

9/23/88

Rob Murphy sets a dubious record by appearing in his 73rd game of the season without recording a win.

He would finish the season with a league-leading 76 appearances and an 0-6 record.

Transactions

9/23/87

The Angels release Doug DeCinces. He signs with the Cardinals, plays in four games, and his career is over.

The Angels fire Cookie Rojas and replace him with Moose Stubing on an interim basis. Doug Rader takes over in 1989.

Deaths

Aurelio Rodriguez passed away OTD in 2000. He spent 17 years in the big leagues and likely would have won a lot of Gold Gloves had it not been for Brooks Robinson.
