Senior Smoke was born OTD in 1948. He posted three double-digit win seasons out of the bullpen, including winning 10 for the 1984 Tigers while also notching 14 saves.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Troy Afenir, who played in four seasons in the bigs from 1987 until 1992 and later became a scout. On of the players he signed was a big outfielder named Judge who hits lots of homers.

Jimmy Jones throws a one-hitter against the Astros in his big-league debut. The lone hit he surrenders is a 3rd-inning triple off the bat of Bob Knepper. Jones was called up from AAA Las Vegas after going 9-10 with a 4.40 E.R.A. and a 1.52 WHIP so it only stands to reason he’d throw a one-hitter.

With the (then) WWF in town, Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman invites former Cincinnati farmhand Randy Poffo into the broadcast booth during the game. Once Reds players notice, they respond by flexing and pointing to Macho Man. Marge Schott is not amused and calls Brennaman on the carpet after the game.
