Happy ’80s Birthday to Ryne Sandberg, who spent 16 years in the major leagues, won an MVP in 1984, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Roger Mason, who made his debut wit the 1984 Tigers and spent nine years in the bigs with seven teams.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Tony Scott, who made his debut with the Expos in 1973 and spent eleven years in the bigs with Montreal, Houston, and St. Louis.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Sam Bowen, who was drafted five times and played in 16 games for the Red Sox between 1977 and 1980.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Mark DeJohn, who played in 24 games for the Tigers in 1982 and moved into coaching. He retired in 2019 after spending 33 years in the Cardinals organization.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Don McCormack, who played in five games for the Phillies in 1980 and 1981 and was on deck when Mike Schmidt hit the home run to win the division in 1980. He later managed in the Phillies organization.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Scott Holman, who won three games for the Mets between 1980 and 1983.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Scott Earl, who appeared in 14 games for the 1984 Tigers backing up Lou Whitaker.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Dan Murphy, who pitched in seven games for the 1989 Padres.

Ken Brett was born OTD in 1948. He was the 4th overall selection in the 1966 draft and spent 14 years in the major leagues with ten teams. Ken passed away in 2003 from brain cancer. He was just 55.

The Yankees sign their second-round draft pick with the agreement that he can still play college football.

Elway hits .318 for Oneonta in the New York/Penn League before deciding to pursue football.

Walt Terrell allows four earned runs in six innings against the Cardinals in his big-league debut. He spends 11 years in the major leagues and wins 111 games, including one in which he homers twice off Fergie Jenkins.

Greg Walker goes 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single off Oakland’s Brian Kingman in his big-league debut. He spends nine years in the majors and many as a hitting coach after he retired.

9/18/84

Larry Sheets goes 1-for-1 as a pinch-hitter against the Yankees in his big-league debut. He spends eight seasons in the bigs with Baltimore, Detroit, and Seattle and enjoyed his best season in 1987 when he hit 31 homers and drove in 94.

Bob Milacki allows just one hit over eight innings against Detroit in his big-league debut and picks up the win. He spends eight yeas in the bigs and wins 39 games.

9/18/88

Trailing the Dodgers by eight games in the N.L. West, Houston gets blown out 10-3 by the Giants, and Astros manager Hal Lanier is so pissed he holds a 90-minute postgame meeting followed by a mandatory workout. Houston plays their next two games against the Dodgers and gets shut out in both of them.

Willie Wilson steals second & third in the 2nd inning of the Royals 5 – 2 win over the Angels, setting an American League-record 28 straight successful SB attempts. He’d steal four more before finally getting caught on September 30th. Don’t sleep on Willie’s 1980 season.

9/18/80

Gary Ward becomes the sixth Twins player to hit for the cycle in the team’s 9-8 loss against the Brewers at County Stadium. Twenty-four years later his son Daryle will also hit for the cycle, making them the first father-son combo to both hit for the cycle.

Dwayne Murphy homers and drives in five in a 10-5 Oakland win over the White Sox.

9/18/83

Eddie Murray homers and drives in five in a 10-9 win over Milwaukee but he did that most days.

9/18/84

The Tigers clinch the AL East on their way to winning the World Series.

9/18/84

Tim Raines steals 4 bases to become the first player in MLB history to swipe at least 70 bases in four straight seasons.

9/18/85

Rich Gedman hits for the cycle and drives in seven in a 13-1 Red Sox win over Toronto.

9/18/86

Reggie Jackson homers thrice in an 18-3 win over Kansas City and joins Babe Ruth and Stan Musial as the only players to hit three homers in a game after the age of 40.

9/18/86

The Padres reinstate Goose Gossage to the active roster after he agrees to donate $25,000 of his salary to charity and apologize to team owner Joan Kroc and team President Ballard Smith for derogatory remarks he made about them earlier in the season. He had been sus pended since August 29th

9/18/87

Darrell Evans homers in the 5th inning of a 7-6 Tigers win over the Brewers and becomes the first 40-year-old ever to reach the 30 home run mark. All dude did was quietly hit dingers for his entire career.

9/18/89

Kirby Puckett goes 3-for-4 and reaches the 200-hit plateau for the fourth straight season. He would finish the year with 215 hits and a .339 batting average.

9/18/86

The Padres release Steve Kemp. He signs with Texas prior to the 1987 season, spends the year in the minor leagues, and returns to the bigs in 1988.
