Jerry Coleman 1984 Padres Postcard

Jerry Coleman was born on this date in 1924. Coleman spent nine years with the Yankees in the late ’40s and ’50s and also served as broadcaster for the Yankees, Angels and Padres. He was named San Diego’s field manager for the 1980 season. Additionally, he flew more than 100 combat missions in WWII and Korea and earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He passed away in 2014.

Steve Carlton beats the Expos 9-5 at The Vet, thanks in large part to two bombs from Schmitty. The win is Carlton’s 12th of the season and 235th of his Phillies career, moving him into first place on the all-time Phillies list. Robin Roberts had been the previous record holder. Carlton still holds the team record with 241 and no one is breaking the record any time soon.
