Happy ’80s Birthday to Enos Cabell, who spent 15 years in the big leagues with five teams, primarily the Astros. He hit .277 over the course of his career and stole 238 bases.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Jerry Reed, who spent nine years in the bigs with four teams and also pitched in the Senior League before it went under. Jerry won 20 games over the course of his major-league career.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Jeff Lahti, who was drafted three times and made his debut with the 1982 Cardinals. He won 17 games over the course of his career and saved 19 for the 1985 Cards. He also won a ring with St. Louis in 1982.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Mike Chris, who was drafted four times and made his debut with the Tigers in 1979 and also spent time in the bigs with the Giants.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Bob Skube, who played in 16 games for the Brewers in 1982 and 1983. He later became a coach in the minor leagues.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Bryan Little, who spent five years in the bigs with the Expos, White Sox, and Yankees, batting .245 over 327 games. He is the brother of former big-league manager Grady Little, and Bryan managed in the minor leagues.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Mike Morgan, who spent 22 years in the major leagues and pitched for 12 teams.

He won 141 games and threw more than 2,700 innings, earning an All-Star nod with the Dodgers in 1991.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Jack Hardy, who appeared in five games for the 1989 White Sox.   

Paul Splittorff was born OTD in 1946. He spent 15 years in the big leagues, all with the Royals and still holds the franchise record for wins with 166. He later was a broadcaster for the team. Paul passed away in 2011.

Willie Aikens and Willie Wilson each drive in two runs and Larry Gura bests Ron Guidry to give the Royals a 7-2 win and a 1-0 advantage in the 1980 ALCS.

As thrilling as the NLCS was in 1980, the ALCS left a lot to be desired in terms of drama, but it was really fun to watch if you happened to be a Royals fan.

In a 1-0 game, Goose Gossage gets the Yankees out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation and New York tacks on two more runs to win 3-0 and take a 2-0 lead in the 1981 A.L. East Division Series. Reggie hits a two-run homer.

Gary Carter homers and drives in two as the Expos take a 2-0 led over the Phillies in the 1981 N.L. East Division Series.

Paul Molitor’s two-run homer and excellent pitching by Don Sutton give the Brewers a 5-3 win in Game Three of the ALCS. The Angels lead the series two games to one.

Tom Seaver announces that, “there is no way I would sign another contract with the Reds.” Cincinnati trades him back to the Mets in December in exchange for Jason Felice, Lloyd McClendon, and Charlie Puelo.

Mr. T shuts the door and the Phillies qualify for the World Series for the 2nd time in four seasons.

Tito Landrum happens and the Orioles are off to the World Series to face the Phillies.

Dave Stieb allows 3 hits over 8 innings and Ernie Whitt and Tony Fernandez each drive in two as the Blue Jays take a 1-0 lead over the Royals in the 1985 ALCS.

The A’s hit four homers and Eck pitches a perfect final two innings to give Oakland a 3-0 advantage in the 1988 ALCS over the Red Sox.

The Mets trail the Dodgers 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th before scoring five to win Game Three of the NLCS 8-4. L.A. reliever Jay Howell is ejected for having pine tar on his glove.

Matt Williams’ two-run shot gives the Giants a 6-4 win over the Cubs and a 3-1 series lead in the 1989 NLCS.

Dave Stewart goes 8 and Rickey is names series MVP as the A’s advance to the World Series for the 2nd straight year.

Managerial Changes

Braves owner Ted Turner calls Bobby Cox, “one of my closest friends… a terrific manager and a terrific person” right after announcing Cox’s dismissal as Atlanta’s manager. Turner eventually hires Joe Torre, while Cox moves on to Toronto.
