Happy ’80s Birthday to former Astros, Braves, and Angels pitcher Frank LaCorte, who once got so upset with himself after after walking the bases loaded in relief of Don Sutton that he burned his uniform in the clubhouse.

Happy ’80s Birthday to Randy Moffitt, who spent 12 years in the bigs with the Giants, Astros, and
Blue Jays. His sister played a bit of tennis from what I understand.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to George Frazier, who won 35 games out of the pen for five teams and later became a broadcaster with the Rockies.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Andy Beene, who went 0-2 for the Brewers in 1983 and 1984. He is the nephew of Fred Beene, Rick Waits, Rick Manning, and Jim Kern, and played with all four of them.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Mike Capel, who won three games for three teams between 1988 and 1991. He made his debut with the Cubs in 1988 and also won a College World Series title with the University of Texas in 1983.

Happy ‘80s Birthday to Chris Gwynn, who spent 10 years in the bigs with the Dodgers, Royals, and Padres and later became a scout for the Pads.

Big Days

10/13/81

The Dodgers lead Montreal 2-0 when Pedro Guerrero and Mike Scioscia hit back-to-back homers off Jeff Reardon to ice Game One of the NLCS. L.A. wins it 5-1.

10/13/81

Graig Nettles’ bases loaded double in the first inning gives the Yankees a 3-0 lead, which is all Tommy John needs, as the Yankees cruise to a 3-1 win over Oakland in Game one of the ALCS.

10/13/82

After being blown out in Game One, the Cardinals even the World Series when they beat Milwaukee 5-4. Pete Ladd’s costly bases loaded walk in the 8th inning proves to be the difference.

10/13/84

Alan Trammell hits two 2-run homers as the Tigers take a 3-1 lead in the 1984 World Series.

ICYMI: That Tigers team was good.

10/13/85

The tarp at Busch Stadium eats Cardinals OF Vince Coleman prior to Game Four of the NLCS.

He’ll miss the rest of the postseason.

10/13/85

Danny Jackson shuts out the Blue Jays and the Royals score on a ground out and a sac fly to beat Toronto 2-0 in Game Five of the ALCS. The Jays still lead the series 3-2.

10/13/87

A Jose Oquendo sac fly is all John Tudor needs as the Cardinals beat the Giants 1-0 in Game Six of the NLCS to tie the series at 3-3. The sac fly comes after Candy Maldonado loses Tony Pena’s line drive in the lights. The ball flies over his head for a triple.

10/13/87

Murray Cook takes over as general manager of the Reds.

10/13/89

Frank Robinson is named A.P. Manager of the Year.

Transactions

10/13/81

The Yankees release Eric Soderholm and his career is over. He spends nine years in the bigs and hits .264 with 102 homers.

10/13/86

The Braves release Omar Moreno and his career is over. He finishes with 1,257 hits, 487 stolen bases, and a ring.

10/13/88

The Phillies release David Palmer, who had rotator cuff surgery in September. He signs with Detroit and appears in five games in 1989 before retiring.

Managerial Changes

10/13/81

The Padres fire manager Frank Howard after the Pads finished in last place for the second consecutive season.

Howard moves on to be a coach with the Mets, and the Pads hire Dick Williams for 1982.

10/13/83

The Mets name Davey Johnson as their new manager.
