Baltimore scores three in the bottom of the 5th and to beat the Phillies 4-1 and even the World Series at 1-1. John Lowenstein homers for the Birds.

Padres pitchers tie a World Series record by issuing 11 walks in a 5 – 2 loss to the Tigers in Game 3 of the World Series. Detroit takes a 2-1 Series lead.

For the second time in the series, Scoop drives home the winning run for the Blue Jays in the 1985 ALCS.

His double off Quiz is part of a three-run 9th to give Toronto a 3-1 win in Game 4.

The Cardinals score two in the first and two in the second, capped by Tommy Herr’s homer to beat the Dodgers 4-2 in Game three of the NLCS. L.A. leads the series 2-1.

Mike Scott shuts down the Mets and the Astros get homers from Alan Ashby and Dickie Thon to beat New York 3-1 to even the NLCS at 2-2.

Tom Brunansky goes 3-for-5 with a 3-run 9th-inning dinger to lead the Twins to their first American League pennant since 1965. Gary Gaetti is named series MVP.

The Dodgers beat the Mets in the NLCS behind Orel Hershiser’s 5-hit shutout and advance to the World Series.

From September 5th, though this game, Hershiser threw 79.2 innings and allowed four earned runs. That’s pretty good.

The Mets release Mike Marshall and his career is over. He finishes with 97 wins, more than 1,200 IP mostly out of the pen, and a Cy Young. The man threw 208 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in 1974 for the Dodgers.

The White Sox release Sparky Lyle and his career is over. He finishes with 99 wins, 238 saves, two rings, and a Cy Young.

Managerial Changes

Bill Virdon 1983 Topps Baseball card

The Expos hire Bill Virdon as their new manager. Virdon was let go by Houston midway through the 1982 season. He stays in Montreal for parts of two seasons and his managerial career is over.
