Happy ’80s Birthday to Gregg Olson, who made his debut with the Orioles in 1988 and saved 27 games in 1989 to win Rookie of the Year.

Steve Rogers throws a 6-hit shutout and beats the Phillies for the 2nd time in the N.L. East Division Series to send Montreal to the NLCS.

Rogers throws 17.2 innings and allows one run in the series.

Coop is sitting fastball against Goose, as he damn well should have been, and Goose gets him with a hook to end the 1981 A.L. East Division Series.

Jerry Reuss strikes out Dave Roberts and the Dodgers are headed to the NLCS.

Joe Morgan and Garry Maddox hit solo homers off Scott McGregor and the Phillies beat the Orioles 2-1 in Game One of the 1983 World Series.

George Brett goes 4-4 with two dingers lead the Royals to a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays in Game Three of the ALCS.

Brett would hit .348 in the series and earn MVP honors.

Lenny Dykstra hits a walk off big fly to give the Mets a 6-5 win in Game Three of the 1986 NLCS.

Bobby Grich delivers a walk off single off Calvin Shiraldi to give the Angels a 4-3, 11-inning win over Boston in Game Four of the ALCS and a 3-1 lead in the series.

10/11/87

Kirby Puckett and Greg Gagne both homer as the Twins score single runs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th to beat Detroit 5-3 in Game Four of the ALCS. They would wrap it up the following day.

10/11/87

Robby Thompson’s 4th inning triple caps a 4-run inning as the Giants beat the Cardinals 6-3 in Game Five of the NLCS and take a 3-2 lead in the series. Joe Price throws five scoreless to get the win. The Cardinals would win it in seven.

10/11/88

Kevin McReynolds goes 4-for-4 with a dinger off Tim Leary and the Mets beat the Dodgers 5-1 to force a 7th game in the 1988 NLCS.

Transactions

10/11/81

The Dodgers activate Ron Cey for the Playoffs. Cey had been out of action since breaking a bone in his forearm after being hit by a pitch on September 9.

10/11/83

The Royals release Cesar Geronimo and his career is over. He finishes with 977 hits, four Gold Gloves, and two rings.

10/11/85

The Twins release John Castino and his career is over.

Castino shared the 1979 A.L. Rookie of the Year with Alfredo Griffin, but suffered a back injury in 1981 that scuttled his career. He was just 29 when he played his last game.  

10/11/89

The Cardinals release Dan Quisenberry. He signs with the Giants but was ineffective in 5 games in 1990 and his career is over.
