Phil Niekro throws a 3-hit shutout and hits a two-run homer to give the Braves a 4-0 win over the Padres and maintain their division lead.

In his first start of the season, Terry Leach throws a 10-inning one-hit shutout against the Phillies. John Denny allows just one hit over nine innings. The Mets score in the top of the 10th on a sac fly to win the game 1-0.

The Orioles sweep a doubleheader against the Brewers to remain alive in the A.L. East. The division race would go down to the final day, with the Brewers prevailing.

Tony Gwynn goes 3-for-4 on the final day of the season to beat Will Clark for the N.L. batting title. He finishes with a .336 average.

The Brewers release Roy Howell. He signs with the Phillies and spends part of 1985 in the minor leagues before retiring.

The Expos release Tony Scott and his career is over. He spends eleven years in the bigs and collects 699 hits for St. Louis, Montreal, and Houston.

Managerial Changes

The Red Sox part ways with Don Zimmer. He’s replaced by Ralph Houk for the 1981 season.

The Braves fire manager Joe Torre and eventually replace him with Eddie Haas.

10/1/86

The Brewers remove the interim tag from Tom Trebelhorn and name him manager for 1987. He pilots the team through the 1991 season
