Murph wins his 2nd straight MVP Award. In 1982 and ’83, Murph hit .291 with 72 homers and 230 RBI along with 53 stolen bases and 183 walks. He also won two Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers.

It’s Free-Agent Draft Day and lefty Steve Trout proves to be the most popular player with 17 teams selecting him. Rick Sutcliffe and Bruce Sutter are two of the most sought-after players but their price tag scares away a lot of teams. Trout ends up re-signing with the Cubs, as does Sutcliffe, while Sutter ends up in Atlanta.

Representatives from Phoenix, Buffalo, New Orleans, Tampa/St. Pete, New Jersey, and Nashville pitch Commissioner Peter Ueberroth on joining MLB as expansion teams. Ueberroth holds a news conference and states that expansion or relocation may come as soon as 1986. It doesn’t come until 1993 when MLB adds the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies.
