Minnie Minoso was born on this day in 1925. He made his debut in 1949 and appeared as a pinch-hitter in two games in 1980, gaining him the rare status of playing in five different decades.

The Red Sox make Rich Gedman the highest-paid catcher in the American League when they sign him to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million plus incentives. The figure makes him the second highest-paid catcher in the big leagues behind Gary Carter.
